This summer Iceland Photo Tour, from September 2 to 10, 2023 (more dates for 2024 coming soon), is a great opportunity to visit such a wonderful destination. Iceland is probably the most desired destination on Earth for any landscape photography enthusiastic. Land of fire and ice, it’s home to some of the most spectacular landscapes you’ll ever see. A destination with countless options for photography.

During 9 days, we’ll be photographing the incredible natural sceneries of this fabulous island. The Midnight Sun will allow us to capture endless sunrises and sunsets. All this, while we are visiting the top locations on the west and the south coast of Iceland. A fantastic opportunity to photograph its waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches and mountains. You won’t ever forget the magical moments this country will bring you.

Besides, the trip will be organized by our own official travel agency for photography lovers. More than 90 photo tours organized and 8 years of experience will guarantee that you live the best possible experience. At the same time, you’ll be guided by one or several of our photo guides, professional photographers with plenty of experience in Iceland.

What will we photograph during this Iceland Photo Tour?

Iceland features some of the most spectacular sceneries all around Earth, so this photo tour will be totally focused on landscape photography. We will be going through the most amazing locations in Iceland’s South coast, as well as in the western Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Among all these marvelous spots, we can highlight extraordinary waterfalls, such as Gullfoss, Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss or Kvernufoss, stunning peaks and mountain ranges, like Kirkjufell, Vestrahörn or Lomagnupur, wonderful volcanic black sand beaches as Reynisfjara, Diamond Beach or Stokksnes, and glacier lagoons like Jökulsarloon or Fjallsarlon. These are just some of the most famous locations that we’ll be photographing, but the island is so spectacular that we’ll be able to see many more incredible places. Even during our routes, we’ll be constantly see fantastic sceneries to photograph.

We have carefully planned this photo tour, so we can get to all these special locations at the best moments of light, sunrise, sunset and golden hours. We have been hosting photo tours in Iceland for many years, so we know the area perfectly, which will be very helfpul during our trip.

Apart from the many Nature wonders existing in Iceland, we will also have the chance to visit some of its towns and villages. Among these, we’ll be visiting small towns as Grundarfjordur, Vik, Höfn and Hof. We will visit the the harbors in some of these villages, such as the ones in Grundarfjordur and in Hófn. Furthermore, we’ll also photograph some really picturesque churches, such as the ones in Vik and Hof, Budhir, or the precious Ingjaldsholl church.

Finally, although this won’t be a wildlife photo tour at all, we will have wonderful opportunities to photograph the precious puffins.

Why doing this Iceland Photo Tour during this time of the year?

Apart from our late fall or winter Iceland photo tours, we also host this summer edition of the tour, due to several reasons. Although we can’t photograph the Northern Lights at this time of the year, since it doesn’t get totally dark during the night, there are other great advantages for visiting Iceland by early summer.

First of all, we are hosting this summer Iceland photo tour because of the Midnight Sun. At early summer, it doesn’t get dark during the night, since the sun will be always near the horizon. This means that we’ll be getting around 21 or 22 hours of daylight! This way, we’ll be able to complete many more visits than during a winter photo tour

At the same time, sunrises and sunsets last for hours. Due to the position of the sun both before and after dawn and dusk, the beautiful light around sunrise and sunset can continue even for hours! Because of this, we might be changing our sleep habits during this photo tour. The best hours of light by early summer will be at night (sunrise can be around 2 or 3am, and sunset around 12:30 or 1am). Therefore, it would make much more sense sleeping during the day, or at least taking a nap, so we are not tired when the best light comes.

Other great advantage of this period, is the presence of beautiful blooming flowers, specially the wonderful lupines. We will be able to photograph this precious purple flower almost all around Iceland. Adding this lovely frame to the already amazing sceneries in the island, will bring us the best possibilities for amazing landscape photography. Furthermore, Iceland will bring us its beautiful greenish summer color, and the rivers and waterfall will look at their best.

Who is this Iceland Photo Tour for?

This summer Iceland Photo Tour is suitable for all physical conditions, ages and photography levels. Firstly, we consider this a quite easy to do trip, with no complicated hikes or physical requirements. Most of the photo locations will be a short walk from the places where we’ll park our vehicles. We will be doing a couple of longer hikes, but they will be very easy and not longer than 30 minutes. We have prepared a trip with no complicated activities, so you can focus your efforts in taking pictures.

Then, there is no age limit, so anyone can join the trip as long as he or she is reasonably healthy and well.

Finally, no minimum photography level is required to participate. Whether you are a beginner, and advanced user, or a professional, photographer, you are welcome to join this trip. Our photo guides will bring you personalized attention, adjusted to your needs, trying to help you capturing the best images of Iceland. And, although you’ll see a recommended gear section below, no minimum photo gear will be mandatory. That’s just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this, but never a list of indispensable items. Even if you are just shooting with a compact camera, or with your smartphone, you’ll be welcome to particpate!

Summary

However, some of our first stops, may be to photograph other totally different subjects, the precious Icelandic horses. There are hundreds of these beautiful animals all around the country, so we’ll have plenty of chances to photograph them.

For late afternoon, we will get to our sunset location, Seljalanfdsdoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. We’ll have plenty of time to explore the area, since there are several waterfalls next to each other. We’ll leave Seljalandsfoss for the end, as it is the most stunning one. From here, we will be able to photograph the sun setting in front of us, with the waterfall in the foreground. Certainly, one of the best views around Iceland.

After this, we’ll continue to Skogafoss, where we’ll have our accommodation next to the waterfall.

DAY 4

We’ll get out in the morning to capture the wonderful Skogafoss waterfall, which will be just next to our hotel. There are many photo possibilities in the area, so we’ll have plenty of time here. Besides the fabulous images of the scene, we will be able to get incredible self portraits, posing in the distance looking to the falls, with the water falling in the background. You’ll love that shoot!

After the visit, we’ll hike to the nearby Kvernufoss waterfall, located at the end of a spectacular canyon. This location is much less crowded than Skogafoss, so we’ll be able to enjoy the outstanding possibilities here. One of the best spots is getting behind the waterfall, where you’ll get a fabulous view of the surroundings, with the water falling in the foreground.

Then, we’ll begin our way East, stopping in the nearby Dyrholaey cliffs. From here, we’ll have incredibly views of the black sand beaches surrounding the spot, being able to get spectacular panoramic shoots. We’ll continue to one of the most famous beaches in Iceland, the Reynisfjara black sand beach. This picturesque landmark is located by a basaltic cliff, and we’ll have the opportunity to shoot the wonderful basalt rocks by its edge.

Afterwards, we’ll stop at the nearby Vik church, being able to capture the precious view of the church surrounded by spectacular lupine fields. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful views in Iceland.

Following this, we’ll continue our way to our next destination, near Höfn: the incredible Stokksnes Peninsula, one of the best areas in Iceland for photography. We’ll stay in the area until it gets dark, capturing the sunset with the stunning view of the Vestrahörn Range in the background.

Finally, we’ll get to our accommodation in Höfn to sleep.

DAY 5

On this day, we’ll be capturing the sceneries around Höfn. Again, we’ll head to Stokksnes, this time for capturing the first lights of the day. Stokksnes is one of the best areas for photography in Iceland, with endless possibilities for getting incredible images. We’ll be able to shoot a wonderful black sand beach, next to an amazing san dune area. All of this, with the spectacular Vestrahörn mountains in the background. Fantastic images can almost be guaranteed visiting a place like this.

In the afternoon, we will be visiting some of the wonderful ice tongues West to Höfn. The stunning Vatnajökul Glacier, the largest one in Europe, has created the fabulous landscapes in the region, bringing us extraordinary places to enjoy photography at its best. There are dozens of amazing ice glacier tongues to choose!

Then, for sunset, we may get back to Stokksnes or, depending on our schedule, head to the Eystrahörn range, another spectacular area further East from there.

DAY 6

After sunrise, we’ll drive West to the nearby Vatnajökul National Park area. We’ll be staying here for the next two days, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the surroundings and get unforgettable images. We are probably talking about the most spectacular part of this Iceland photo tour.

We will begin visiting the Jökulsarlon glaciar lagoon, the most famous one in Iceland. Here, we’ll may be enjoying the view of hundreds of icebergs on the lagoon, that get out to the sea, and then comes to the shoreline due to the waves, creating the surreal views in Diamond Beach.

After this visit, we’ll drive to visit another glaciar lagoon, Fjallsarlon, a 10 minutes drive from there. We’ll hike down to the lagoon shoreline, being able to enjoy an otherworldly scene. This is one of the most photogenic glaciar views in the island, so we’ll be able to get wonderful shots here.

Finally, we’ll get back to the Jökulsarlon area, this time heading to Diamond Beach. Here’ well photograph some of the most incredible pictures during this photo tour. We’ll have the chance to capture fabulous icebergs of very different shapes and sizes (some of them as big as a car), as they are pushed to the shoreline by the waves. This will be a great place to practice long exposure photography, with the help of neutral density filters. This way, you’ll get lovely pictures as the waves come to the shoreline. We’ll stay in the area until the lights are gone, when we’ll head back to our accommodation to sleep.

viaje fotografico Islandia

DAY 7

We’ll continue in the Vatnajökul National Park during the whole day. We will begin visiting Kviarjökul, one of the most beautiful in the area, and usually not crowded at all. We’ll hike in the area for a while, as we take pictures of the spectacular surroundings.

Then, we’ll continue visiting Hof, a really tiny village, in which we’ll be able to photograph one of the most picturesque churches all around Iceland, Hofskirkja. This beautiful turf church, from 1884, is an outstanding spot for photography purposes. Turf churches were popular at the end of the XVIII century, allowing for a much better isolation from the hard winter Iceland conditions.

Afterwards, we’ll head to Skaftafell, another otherworldly glacial area, which was considered a national park by itself until 2008. From that year, the area became part of the Vatnajökul National Park. Here, we’ll visit more ice tongues, each one surrounded by gorgeous sceneries. We’ll be able to capture fantastic shots in the area, apart from great closeups of the ice.

Finally, we’ll get back to Fjallsarlon for the evening, where we’ll stay photographing the last lights of the day, before getting back to our accommodation.

DAY 8

Today, we’ll enjoy an early morning photo session at Diamond Beach, capturing the extraordinary icebergs again. Same as during our previous visit, it will be one of the most fruitful visits during the tour, being able also to do long exposure photography.

After this session, we’ll begin our way back West to Selfoss. It will be a long route, but there are many great locations to shoot at. First of all, we’ll capture the stunning Lomagnupur, a huge mountain next to the road. Usually, we’ll find different ponds by its feet, so we will be able to photograph the extraordinary reflections of the mountain on them. Later, we’ll visit the incredible Fjaðrárgljúfur, an otherworldly canyon with mesmerizing views, which we can consider a paradise for photographers. After this, we will probably be doing some more stops for photography, but trying to get to our sunset location in time.

For the end of the day, we’ll choose one of the several options in the Golden Circle area, near Selfoss. Depending on our schedule and the participants’ energies, we might be hiking to Bruarfoss. This is a small waterfall, but with an intense turquoise color, which offer some of the best photo possibilities in Iceland. Alternatively, we might be visiting the huge Gulfoss waterfall, one of the most famous and photographed ones in the country.

After the visit, we’ll get back to our accommodation to sleep.

DAY 9

We’ll wake up early to photograph some nearby locations, before the end of the photo tour. First, if we visited Bruarfoss on the previous evening, we’ll get now to Gulfoss. Again, this is one of the hugest waterfalls in Iceland, as well as one of the most impressive ones. We’ll get fabulous images of the area from its different viewpoints, getting a great collection of photos of the area.

Afterwards, we’ll visit the Geysir area, where we’ll be able to capture pictures of the amazing Strokkyr geyser. This geyser erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, so we’ll sure be able to get images of it.

Finally, we’ll head back to Keflavik International Airport, where this trip will end.

We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. RECOMMENDED PHOTO GEAR

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

Camera

DSLR or MIRRORLESS CAMERA RECOMMENDED

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the amazing Iceland landscapes by spring, as they also add wonderful interest to any rock, stone or even iceberg in the foreground.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 70-200MM

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm won’t be very used on this trip. You can bring it to capture some distant sceneries, like distant mountains and glaciers, but it will also add extra weight to your backpack.

TRIPOD

A STURDY TRIPOD

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

ND, GRADUATED AND POLARIZER FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

BATTERIES

Enough spare batteries

Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Although the weather won’t be as cold as during winter, we’ll shoot for plenty of hours each day, so you should bring several spare batteries.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

REMOTE CONTROLLER OR INTERVALOMETER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

MEMORY CARDS

ENOUGH MEMORY CARDS

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.

CLEANING KIT

CLEANING ITEMS FOR THE CAMERA AND LENSES

Because of the usual windy conditions and the waterfalls, a good photo cleaning kit will be almost mandatory. A blower, as well as wet and dry towels would be recommended, you’ll need them often!

We know the island very well, after many photo tours throughout the years, and always include good quality hotels or guesthouses that we already know. Each traveller will be staying in a double twin shared room, shared with another participant of the tour. Rooms will always include a private bath.

If you come with another person to the trip, you’ll share the room, However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll choose a roommate for you between the other participants in the trip (always same genre). Anyway, you will also have the chance to choose a single room for you, paying an extra supplement. Contact us for all details.

Can I join this photo tour regardless my country of residence?

Absolutely, no matter the placer where you live to join us!

Anyone can join this Iceland Photo Tour, no matter your country of residence. Our main travel agency is settled in Santander, Spain, but our trips are open to customers from countries all around the world. Therefore, we may have clients from different places in our photo tours.

This Iceland Photo Tour will begin at Keflavik International Airport, in Iceland. Therefore, all the participants need to get there for the first day of the tour, traveling from their country of residence, with no need to travel to a particular town to fly together to Iceland.

What else should I bring to the tour?

We will send you all the information about what you need to bring

Once you have confirmed your booking for this Iceland Photo Tour, we will send you the trip info with a recommended gear PDF guide. This will include suggestions not only about the photography gear, but also about the clothes and accessories you might need during this photo tour. To sum up, you won’t have to worry about anything, since our expert photo leaders and guides will inform you about everything you will need, so you can enjoy your travel as much as possible!

As a first tip, we would suggest you bringing a light color down or shell jacket (for example red, orange, yellow, light green, etc…). That jacket will protect you from the cold and the rain but, at the same time, you’ll look great when photographed in some of the most beautiful locations around all Iceland!

‘My Iceland Photo Tour with Dream Photo Expeditions, has been a succession of surprises, starting with the trip itself, which was a gift from my children. I have discovered a country with amazing landscape to photograph, as well as a great group of travelers that, together with the photo guide of the trip, Sergio Lanza, made me feel like home!
The organization of the photo tour was impeccable. The flexibility of the program and the capability of adaptation to weather changes in Iceland, have allowed us to make the most of our days in Iceland, getting to photograph always the best lights in the most impressive locations.
Sergio is a person who inspires confidence from the very first moment, being a great professional and loving his job. He is always trying to get everything perfect, and trying to make us all feel good. A great expert in the area, who took us to the best locations, photographing from the best points of view, and at the best hours for photography. Besides, he is an excellent photographer, always ready to solve any photography question. He is a great professional but, over all, an amazing person to travel with.
I returned home with thousands of photos and good friends, with whom I hope to travel again in any other Dream Photo Expeditions photo tour.’
