We introduce our Scottish Highlands Photo Tour, available in March and September each year. Over 9 days, we will photograph the Scottish Highlands, one of the most spectacular destinations in Europe for landscape photography. During this time, we will traverse the amazing landscapes of northern Britain, capturing magical views, cliffs, castles, and lakes. We will delve into the Isle of Skye to capture its incredible landscapes and enjoy the most spectacular nature of the British Isles.

During this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour, as with all our other trips, we will maximize our time photographing the destination. In particular, we will pay special attention to the moments of best light, sunrises, and sunsets. However, due to the frequent bad weather in the area, there is a good chance of storms occurring, with the great possibilities they offer for capturing spectacular light.

All this will be organized by our travel agency for photography enthusiasts, with extensive experience after more than 5 years and 45 organized photo tours. Additionally, you will have the constant assistance of one or several of our photographic guides, with prior experience in the destination and many trips made around the planet. This will ensure that you achieve fantastic photographic results while learning and progressing in your photography.

What to Photograph on Our Scottish Highlands Photo Tour?

Undoubtedly, this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour is entirely focused on landscape and architectural photography. In terms of landscapes, it is one of the most spectacular destinations globally, and it also stands out architecturally, capturing the beautiful Edinburgh and the marvelous Scottish castles.

Regarding landscapes, during the trip, we will photograph both mountain landscapes and seascapes. Among the multiple locations we will capture, it’s worth noting impressive mountains, spectacular rock formations, powerful waterfalls, steep cliffs, beautiful beaches, gorgeous rivers and streams, or the mythical Scottish lochs. Therefore, we are talking about an extraordinary destination for any landscape photography enthusiast.

Some of the legendary locations we will photograph include the fascinating Loch Ness, with the story of its mysterious monster, the Etive Mor waterfalls, the imposing rock formation of the “Old Man of Storr” or the formidable cliffs of Neist Point. However, these are just a small sample of the many locations we will visit during this fantastic photographic journey.

On the other hand, we cannot forget about the impressive architecture of Scotland. Apart from our visit to Edinburgh, during this photographic journey, we can photograph the fabulous Scottish castles. Photographing these castles, with the country’s amazing landscapes, will be an absolutely unforgettable experience.

When We Conduct This Scottish Highlands Photo Tour?

We have scheduled our Scottish Highlands Photo Tour for these dates because it is one of the best times of the year to travel to Scotland. On the June trip, we can photograph the country at the end of spring, with the beautiful green tones covering the entire landscape. On the other hand, in September, we can already enjoy the first autumnal colors, something that will enhance the beauty of these already incredible locations. Additionally, statistically, September tends to be much less rainy than October or November.

On both dates, we also avoid the busiest tourist months of summer, such as July and August, so we won’t encounter as many tourists during our stay.

In any case, it should be noted that it’s challenging to travel to Scotland for 10 days without encountering any rain.

Who is This Scottish Highlands Photo Tour For?

Our Scottish Highlands Photo Tour is a low-difficulty trip, suitable for everyone. The trip is suitable for all levels, both physical and photographic, as well as for all ages.

Firstly, it is a trip suitable for all physical levels. Most of the locations we will photograph will be very close to where we park. However, we will do some short walks to reach other locations. Nonetheless, these are simple and not very long journeys, so you don’t need to worry. Moreover, the places we will reach after these walks will undoubtedly be incredible.

Similarly, there is no age limit, as long as you are reasonably healthy.

Regarding the photographic level, the Scottish Highlands Photo Tour is suitable for all levels. You don’t need to have a high level or even previous experience in taking photos. Our photographic guides assist each participant during the trip, providing personalized attention and adapted to each one’s level. Thanks to this, you will return home with fabulous images of the trip.

Finally, you don’t need a minimum photographic equipment to participate. Although you will find a section on recommended equipment later, it is just a list of the ideal photographic equipment for the trip. However, it is by no means essential equipment to be able to participate. As an example, sometimes we have clients who simply use compact cameras, or even their mobile phone.

In Summary

With all this, we are saying that this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour  is an excellent opportunity to photograph the fascinating landscapes of the country while you progress in your photography. A unique occasion to capture the infinite beauty of the Scottish lands, immortalizing its most impressive landscapes alongside its magical castles.

If you are passionate about landscape photography, this trip is highly recommended for you. A perfect destination for an unforgettable journey, while you capture hundreds of beautiful photos. All in a very small group, to foster learning and the best possible experience. Don’t miss this opportunity, and book your spot for this great trip now.

Today, we will wake up early to visit the nearby Loch Awe by sunrise, only a 5 minutes drive from our accommodation. In this incredible lake, we’ll be able to photograph the fantastic Kilchurn Caste, being our main objective for the session. If lucky, we might get not windy condition, which would allow for spectacular reflections of the castle and the surrounding mountains over the lake.

After enjoying sunrise and golden hour as much as possible, we’ll head to our following destination, Glencoe. We will spend most of the day stopping by many of the impressive locations along the road. Among these, we could highlight several extraordinary waterfalls, such as Etive Mor, The Meeting of the Three Waters, Glencoe, Steall or Coe River. But, besides these, we will also photograph Achtriotchan Lake, as well as many other mesmerizing views we will be finding throughout the route.

After leaving our luggage at our accommodation in Glencoe, we will continue to the Stalker Castke. This gorgeous castle, located at Loch Laich, (which is part of the Linnhe one), will be our sunset location for the day. Being able to photograph such a mythical and enchanting castle, will be one of the highlights of this Scotland photo workshop. Certainly, it’s kind of a paradise for photographers. If we are lucky to get good lights by sunset, we’ll enjoy an unforgettable show.

After shooting the area also by blue hour, we’ll get back to our accommodation to sleep.

Etive Mor Scotland Winter Photo Tour | Scottish Highlands Photo Tour

We’ll leave Glencoe early in the morning, to get to the Etive Mor falls for sunrise. This is another of the top locations around the country, and will bring us impressive photo opportunities, as the sunlight illuminates the area.

After sunrise, we’ll continue our way to our next destination. However, we will be stopping several times along our way. One of the most remarkable visits will take place at Glenfinnan Viaduct, world famous because of the stream train that passes over it. If lucky, we will be able to photograph this precious train, best known as ‘the Harry Potter train’.

Afterwards, we’ll continue our way to another of the most awaited locations during this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour, the Eilean Donan Castle. Located by Loch Duich, we are talking about one of the top landmarks in this beautiful country. We’ll stay in the area for the rest of the day, photographing the location by sunset. Furthermore, we’ll be capturing the castle illuminated at blue hour, in one of the most magical moments of the trip.

Once it’s totally dark, we’ll get back to our accommodation to sleep.

Today, we’ll get back to Eilean Donan Castle, this time for sunrise. As this is one of the most beautiful locations in Scotland, we will make sure to make the most of it during these two visits. We’ll be there as the sun illuminates the area, capturing the castle at golden hour.

Finally, we’ll visit Elgol for sunset, where we’ll photograph its beautiful port and its amazing rocky beach. There, as the sun is setting, we will enjoy the amazing light in front of the scene we will be capturing. After the session, we will drive to Portree, where we will stay for the next 4 nights.

We’ll wake up early to get to another of the top locations of this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour, The Old Man of Storr. This wonderful rock formation, as well as The Needle, are located at the foot of the impressive mountain known as The Storr, all in an amazing scenery.

The area is around a half and hour drive from Portree, and once we get there, we’ll have to hike for another half an hour. Therefore, we’ll have to get early enough to make the most of the session. However, be sure it will be totally worth it! We’ll get the reward of photographing one of the most amazing natural areas in Scotland, with spectacular panoramic views of the region.

Alternatively, for those who don’t want to do the whole hike, we will give the option of keeping taking pictures near the parking area.

After this visit, we will get to the nearby Loch Fada and Loch Leathan, very close to the coast. We’ll be searching for great compositions around these lakes, with the impressive The Storr and The Old Man of Storr in the background.

Finally, we will get to another incredible area of Skye, Fairy Glen. This magical location features precious rounded hills and mounds that seem to be taken from a fairytale. We’ll stay in the area for sunset, making the most from the endless photo opportunities we’ll have here.

Today, we’ll have to wake up very early again, to head to the Fairy Pools, a fantastic area with crystal clear blue pools and falls, which will allow us to get wonderful photos. Here, we’ll be able to practice long exposure photography, using neutral density filters. This way, we will get very different effects on the water, depending on the shutter speed used.

This area of the River Brittle, at the foot of the Cuillin Mountains, features amazing photographic potential, so we’ll stay there during most part of the morning.

Afterwards, we will head to the following spot, another of the most amazing locations in Scotland, Neist Point, and the impressive Neist cliffs. For many, this is the most spectacular location in the Isle of Skye, and even in all Scotland. From a photographic point of view, the area is kind of a paradise for photo lovers, with amazing views of the surroundings, that will take our breath away!

We’ll spend the rest of the day at the cliffs, photographing sunset from the area. As the sun is setting by the horizon, we’ll be able to capture extraordinary pictures of the cliffs and the beautiful lighthouse in the background. There will be infinite possibilities to get fantastic images around us, so we’ll make sure to explore all the possibilities. Undoubtedly, this will be one of the most fruitful moments of the trip.

After blue hour, we will get back to our accommodation, to rest after a very intense day.

One more day, we’ll get up early to get to another incredible location, from where we’ll capture sunrise. This time, we’ll visit Mealt Falls, a wonderful 180 foot (55 meter) high waterfall by the Kilt Rock cliffs, that falls directly into the sea.

After exploring the area for enough time, we’ll have breakfast and head to the next destination, not so far away, the Quiraing area. We’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the surroundings of this mountainous region, with its beautiful greenish tones mossy rocks and amazing rock formations.

We will hike to some of the most remarkable spots in the region, but stopping constantly to photograph the wonderful views and details around us. Among those spots, we should highlight some rock formations, such as The Needle, The Table or The Prison, apart from lakes, valleys and hills.

After photographing sunset from Quiraing, we will get back to our accommodation to sleep.

Today, we’ll leave early our accommodation and drive to our sunrise location, Loch Nan Eilean. If there is no wind, we will be able to capture the wonderful reflections of the mountains over the lake.

After sunrise, we will stop for breakfast, and begin our way back East, stopping several times to photograph the area around us. One of the places we’ll photograph will be Plodda Falls, a 131 feet (40 meter) high waterfall, located in the middle of a fantastic forest.

For sunrise, we will visit probably the most famous locations in Scotland, the world famous Loch Ness. Despite it will not be one of the most beautiful lakes we will visit during our trip, it will bring us also great photo possibilities, apart from the chance to explore this magical place, searching for the mythical lake monster.

After photographing sunset by the lake, we’ll continue our way to our accommodation, in Glencoe.

General Considerations

This Scottish Highlands Photo Tour is organized by the Official Travel Agency ‘Viajes Fotográficos – Dream Photo Expeditions’ ( hereinafter referred to as ‘the travel agency’).

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we offer, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itinerary shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photo guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

Each traveler is responsible of having all the documentation needed for the trip, as well as for entering the destination/s. To visit Scotland, you need a valid Passport and might need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the country. Always check the requirements with your country authorities before traveling to a foreign destination. The photographers and the travel agency have no responsibility about each traveler’s documentation, or about the requirements to be allowed to enter in Scotland or any other country.

Travel Insurance

This Scottish Highlands Photo Tour includes a basic assistance insurance. However, we strongly recommend you to bring a full travel insurance, which has unlimited or high limit money coverages in case of accident or disease.

Personal Counseling

The travel agency will give personal counseling and advice to travelers when purchasing their trip. Customers will receive a list with everything that they might need for the route, tips about how to prepare a medical kit for the travel, recommendations about the photography gear for the place, etc… At the same time, our staff will be happy to help and solve any doubt that the clients could have while they are preparing their trip.

We are completely sure that this Scottish Highlands Photo Tour will be an unforgettable experience for travelers, as well as an intensive learning process. The travel agency will always try to promote values such as respect (cultural, social and environmental). Those values will always prevail in all our trips. At the same time, ‘Dream Photo Expeditions’ will always ensure that the impact of their trips is never negative for the country, their citizens or their wildlife.

The travel agency, tour leaders, guides, or the photographers hosting the trip, will have no responsibility at all for any accident, loss, theft or damage suffered by the customers participating on it.

Each customer declares that he or she accepts all the conditions on this trip at the time he or she is doing a reservation request and/or payment for it.

At the moment of booking, the client will be required to send an initial payment of US$600 (US$863 if choosing single room). Payments can be done by bank transfer, by credit or debit card, and by PayPal. However, please notice that credit or debit card and PayPal payments are subject to a supplement fee, to cover the costs of these payment methods.

The remaining balance will be due 60 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

However if the client doesn’t show or cancels the trip, the following cancellation policies will be applied:

– Less than 60 days prior to the trip: US$600 (US$863 in case they had chosen single room basis).
– Greater than 60 days prior to the trip: 100% of the trip cost.

Prices are based in the Exchange rates by September, the 10th, 2020. The currency may be updated until 21 days prior to the departure, according to Spanish Travel Laws, applying a supplement/discount in case of change.

Once the reservation is done by the client, and the services and their prices are confirmed by us, these prices only could be revised until 20 calendar days prior to the departure dates, only in case there are variations in the transportation costs (including the fuel prices), in accommodations, in rates and taxes referring to certain services (such as landing, boarding in ports and airports), or in monetary exchange rates applied to the trip.

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

We recommend you bringing a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can also join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the impressive Scottish landscapes. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the night photography sessions.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm might be very useful on this trip. It will allow us capturing some distant sceneries, like distant mountains, but it will also add extra weight to your backpack.

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.
