TIERRA DEL FUEGO PHOTO TOUR DETAILS

This Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour, from May 7 to 14, 2023, is a perfect complement to our Patagonia Photo Tour. In it, we will travel to Ushuaia, the southernmost city of Argentina, touring the most beautiful places of this beautiful part of the American continent. As in the Patagonia tour, in this adventure we will be able to photograph fabulous lakes, beautiful glaciers, and fascinating mountains and peaks.

On this magical itinerary, we will pass between Argentina and Chile, enjoying beautiful scenery and endless photographic opportunities. At the same time, we will visit the most photogenic locations during sunrise and/or sunset, in search of the best lights of each day, which will allow us to obtain extraordinary photographs. A simple trip, without long or hard walks, but that will allow us to capture all the beauty of the area, in the autumn season, the perfect time.

All this, in a very small group, and with the help of our photographic guides, who will be in charge of helping you enjoy an unforgettable trip. In addition to photographing the most spectacular places in Tierra del Fuego, we will help you learn and execute all kinds of photographic techniques, giving you a totally personalized attention. Thanks to this, we will be able to return home with lots of magnificent images.

What will we photograph during our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour?

In this Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour, we will focus almost exclusively on landscape photography, as well as seascapes. Due to the majesty of the landscapes of this beautiful area of Argentina and Chile, the possibilities for taking fantastic images will be endless. Among the places we will visit, you will be able to photograph several lakes of different colors, such as the Laguna de los Cisnes, the Laguna Esmeralda, or the Laguna Negra, waterfalls such as the beautiful Velo de la Novia waterfall, beaches, and spectacular peaks and mountains.

In addition, we will have the opportunity to photograph some of the fauna of Tierra del Fuego, such as the sea lions of Ushuaia Bay and the Beagle Channel, or the majestic king penguins, which we will photograph in the natural reserve of the same name. For these occasions, having a telephoto lens will be of great help.

Finally, during some of the nights of this trip we will do night photography sessions, where we will be able to capture the magic of the night skies over the beautiful landscapes of the area.

Why take this Photo Tour to Tierra del Fuego at this time of the year?

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour takes place at this time of year to enjoy the beauty of the fall colors, possibly the best time to photograph the area. If we are lucky, we will be able to find the reddish colors typical of the season, which will give us the best photographic possibilities.

At the same time, autumn is usually synonymous with a higher rate of intense and colorful skies, so every sunrise and sunset we will try our luck from the most spectacular locations. If we are lucky enough to find those conditions, we will definitely live and immortalize truly epic moments.

Finally, autumn in Tierra del Fuego means fewer tourists, something that will greatly facilitate our photographic outings, being able to enjoy many of these places being practically alone.

Who is this Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour for?

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour can be considered of low difficulty, so it is a trip suitable for everyone, both in terms of physical fitness and age. As a general rule, any person in reasonable health will be able to join the trip without fear of the demands that this itinerary may imply.

The vast majority of the routes that we will undertake during the trip will be very short and without any difficulty whatsoever. Only our hike to Laguna Esmeralda, near Ushuaia, will take a longer time, but without any difficulty, as it has a almost no slope.

As for the photographic level, the trip is suitable for all levels. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting to take pictures, or if your level is basic, but you can also make the most of the trip if you already have an advanced level or even if you are a professional photographer. Our guides and photographic instructors give a totally personalized attention, so we will focus on the level and needs of each of the participants in the trip. In this way, we ensure that each of you can go back home with fantastic images from the trip.

Likewise, there is no minimum equipment required, although you can find below a list of the ideal photographic equipment for the trip. Any DSLR or mirrorless camera will do, and some clients even travel with just a compact camera or smartphone.

Summary

To sum up, we can conclude that this is a trip with enormous possibilities for all lovers of landscape photography, in an area full of contrasts and beauty. A journey that will take us to photograph mountain scenery, but also the beautiful landscapes on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. An adventure in which we will immortalize crystal clear lakes, rivers and splendid waterfalls.

While photographing these breathtaking locations, you will learn and progress in your photography, receiving instruction and suggestions from our photographic guide(s). During our stay in Tierra del Fuego, we will make sure that you make the most of every moment, so that you can achieve excellent results.

All this while traveling in a very small group, something that will make the experience as complete as possible. Without a doubt, we are talking about a unique opportunity to photograph one of the most spectacular areas not only of Argentina or Chile, but of the entire South American continent. Do not miss this opportunity to join this great trip, and enjoy with us the magical Tierra del Fuego.

ITINERARY
DAY 1

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour will start with the group meeting at the Rio Gallegos airport. From here, we will get into our vehicles to go to the first photographic location of the trip, the Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon). This fascinating lake, formed in an ancient crater, will be the place where we will be able to enjoy the first sunset of our adventure.

Once it gets dark, we will go to Río Gallegos to have dinner and rest at our lodging.

DAY 2

At dawn, we will get up early and head to the Atlantic coast, where we will visit a stranded ship on a beach, as the first light of day illuminates the scene. The golden light of the first hours of the day will provide fantastic photographic possibilities.

After breakfast, we will start our way south, heading to the town of Porvenir. Along the route, we will make several stops to take pictures of the beautiful scenery around us.

In the afternoon, before going to the village, we will visit some of the lakes in the area, reserving for the sunset the visit to one of the locations with more potential, the Laguna de los Cisnes (Swan Lagoon). We will stay here until it gets dark, and then, depending on the conditions, we will evaluate the possibility of doing a night photography session next to an abandoned bus located near Porvenir.

Finally, after finishing our session, we will return to the lodge to sleep.

DAY 3

Today we will get up early again to photograph the sunrise, which in this case we will do from another of the lakes that exist near the town.

Then, we will resume our route to the south, stopping in this case at the King Penguin Natural Reserve. As its name suggests, here we will be able to photograph the mythical king penguin, for which we will visit the reserve.

After our visit, we will continue to the town of Rio Grande, to visit, in the vicinity, the Koy Yar Sea of Stones. This place is a beach where we find spectacular rock formations, which will allow us to experiment with countless magnificent compositions.

Once it is dark, we will go to rest to our lodging, in the town of Tolhuin.

DAY 4

We will start the day getting up early once again, this time heading towards the Laguna Negra Provincial Reserve. Here we will be able to capture the first light of day illuminating the mountains surrounding this fabulous lake.

Then, we will start the last part of our route towards the mythical town of Ushuaia, the southernmost town in Argentina. During our tour, we will again make several photographic stops, where we will visit the most beautiful spots in the area. Among the locations we will photograph, we highlight the Laguna Blanca, the Lagunas Gemelas, the Lago Escondido, or the Garibaldi Pass, with its stunning views.

Finally, before arriving in Ushuaia, we will photograph the sunset from Laguna Victoria, after which we will drive the last miles to our lodging.

DAY 5

Today we will visit one of the waterfalls in the area to photograph the sunrise, the Velo de la Novia waterfall.

After breakfast, we will take a boat trip out of town, through Ushuaia Bay, to the Beagle Channel. In this fantastic excursion, we will reach the mythical Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, also known as Lighthouse at the End of the World, where we will be able to take fantastic pictures. In the area, we will also have the opportunity to photograph a multitude of sea lions, so we will have our telephoto lenses ready.

Once we return to Ushuaia, we will head towards the Turbal de las Tres Lagunas, the place chosen to photograph the sunset of this day. If we are lucky, we will be able to capture stunning reflections of the mountains from the area, a great end to a very complete day.

After dark, we will return to our hotel in Ushuaia to rest.

RECOMMENDED PHOTO GEAR

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

Camera

DSLR or MIRRORLESS CAMERA RECOMMENDED

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the amazing Tierra del Fuego landscapes, allowing us to capture beautiful images, along with stunning close-ups.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 70-200MM

A 70-200mm or even 100-400mm telephoto lens will allow us to get amazing images of the peaks from a distance, focusing on their details.

FAST LENS FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 14MM 1'8 OR A 20MM 1'4

These kind of lenses are not really essential, if you already have a fast wide angle. However, if you already have a lens like a 14mm 1’8 or a 20mm 1’4, it would be perfect for the night sessions.

TRIPOD

A STURDY TRIPOD

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

ND, GRADUATED AND POLARIZER FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

REMOTE CONTROLLER OR INTERVALOMETER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

BATTERIES

Enough spare batteries

Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Given the cold temperatures, batteries will run much faster than usual. Therefore, you should bring enough batteries to avoid running out of energies.

MEMORY CARDS

ENOUGH MEMORY CARDS

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.

PRactical Information

Details about the trip and the destination

Is there a minimal physical level to join this trip?

No, this is an easy level trip, suitable for all audiences.

This Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour is considered simple, suitable for all physical levels. Almost all the locations we will photograph will be just a few meters away from the places where we will park, so the physical demands will be minimal. There will only be a slightly longer walk, but with almost no elevation gain, which will require about an hour, stopping to take photos frequently.

On the other hand, there is no age limit, as long as you are in reasonably good health.

Do I need a minimal photography level to join the trip?

No, it is a trip suitable for all levels.

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour is suitable for all levels, even for people who are new to photography, or just looking to take pictures with a compact camera or cell phone. No knowledge or minimum photographic level is required to join. All of our trips are designed for participants of all levels, whether they are amateurs, amateurs, advanced users, or professionals.

This is because our photographic guides and instructors take care of giving personalized attention to each participant during the trip, helping them to take the best images of the destination.

What kind of weather can I expect during this trip?

Temperatures will be medium to cold, with a chance of a rainy day.

This Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour takes place in the middle of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, as we try to photograph the spectacular colors of this time of the year. For this reason, and being in mountainous areas, we can expect cold average temperatures, being possible to reach 0ºC, or even a little less, at night. Likewise, we may encounter some rain and winds, frequent in the area.

Therefore, we recommend dressing in layers, being ideal for this purpose technical mountain clothing. We recommend wearing a medium or thick polar fleece, as well as a down jacket or a medium synthetic coat, necessary for the nights. It is also highly recommended to bring a waterproof jacket such as Gore Tex or similar, to protect against rain and wind. In any case, when you confirm your trip reservation, you will receive our recommended equipment guide for more information and details.

Are meals included on this trip?

No, meals are not included in the trip

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour does not include meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). This will allow us to have maximum flexibility during the trip, to focus as much time as possible on what matters most to us, photography.

We will usually have breakfast at the lodges or in cafeterias after our sunrise sessions. Then, we will have some of the lunches and dinners as picnics, with products bought in supermarkets (sandwiches, fruit, snacks, etc), while in other occasions we will go to restaurants, or to the hotels themselves. In any case, we will have plenty of time to enjoy the extraordinary cuisine of the area, where meat stands out (almost essential to try the grilled lamb), and sweets such as alfajor.

Which payment options do you offer?

We offer several payment options for you

Currently, the main payment option we have is the bank transfer. However, if you prefer it, we also have other payment options, such as credit or debit card, PayPal or Transferwise. Please notice that these other payment options may apply a commission fee. You can ask us about these different payment options.

What kind of accommodations will we have?

During the base trip we will stay in mid-range accommodations.

In this Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour, we will stay in medium/tourist category hotels, lodges, apartments or cabins, on a room only basis, and in double, triple or quadruple rooms, to be shared with other participants in the trip, with private bathroom.

If you come with someone else to the trip, you can share a room, but if not, we will assign you a roommate, always of the same gender. In any case, there is the possibility of hiring accommodation in a single room for an additional supplement.

Can I join this photo tour regardless my country of residence?

Absolutely, no matter the place where you live to join us!

Anyone can join this Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour, regardless of the country where they live. Although our office is located in Santander, Spain, our trips are open to participation from anywhere on the planet, so we have clients from countries all over the world. However, Spanish will always be the language used during the trip (sometimes together with English).

Our Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour will start at the International Airport of Río Galegos, Argentina. All participants will have to be at that meeting point during the starting day of the trip, at a time to be determined by us, where they will have to arrive from their place of origin. Therefore, it is not necessary to pass through Spain before the start of the trip.

What else should I bring to the tour?

We will send you all the information about what you need to bring

After booking this Tierra del Fuego Photo Tour, you will receive our travel guide and equipment recommendation to take with you on the trip. This recommendation refers not only to the clothes, accessories and necessary items to take on the trip, but also to the photographic equipment. In short, you will not have to worry about anything, as our experts will inform you of everything you need to bring to make the most of this trip.

A first tip for the tour is to bring a coat or parka in bright colors, such as red, orange, light green or yellow, which will make it easier for us to take fantastic portraits of you in some of the most incredible locations on the island!
