Our Faroe Islands Photo Tour is entirely focused on landscape photography, as we are talking about one of the most complete natural destinations in all of Europe. Within this category, we will practice both natural landscape photography and seascape photography.
The beauty and magic of the Faroe Islands make it a unique destination. In recent years, it has become one of the most popular destinations among landscape photography enthusiasts. Its incredible natural settings make it one of the most attractive options for this type of photography. In the Faroes, we can photograph rushing waterfalls, fascinating seascapes, beautiful lakes, and imposing cliffs. Additionally, we will be able to capture some of its picturesque churches, as well as houses with turf-covered roofs, or lighthouses situated in dreamlike locations.
However, among so many beautiful locations, the most remarkable feature at this time of the year will be the lovely green hues that color every scene on the islands. This intense green of late spring will dominate every place we visit. These hues will appear even more vivid during the golden hour, under the light of sunset or after sunrise. Therefore, we will pay special attention to these times, the best light moments of the day.
Moreover, during our Faroe Islands Photo Tour, we will also have the opportunity to practice bird photography. Specifically, at this time of year, we will have fantastic opportunities to photograph the formidable puffins that nest on the islands. In particular, the island of Mykines is where we will probably have the most chances to photograph these beautiful birds.
Lastly, and as a curiosity, during the tour, we will have plenty of opportunities to photograph some of the nearly 90,000 sheep that inhabit the Faroe Islands.
We run this Faroe Islands Photo Tour in late spring/early summer for various reasons that make us believe it is one of the best times of the year for it. On the one hand, being a remote area with limited infrastructure, summer is the time when we can move between the islands with the least difficulty. Although it is an area that also shines in its full splendor during the winter, accessing the most beautiful locations would be very challenging due to the weather.
On the other hand, in early summer, we will enjoy many hours of daylight each day, with the night not getting completely dark. This phenomenon, known as the Midnight Sun, will allow us to enjoy long photography sessions every day of the tour. Furthermore, for this very reason, sunsets and sunrises can be epic and may even blend together, as the sun, when setting, remains very close to the horizon. Therefore, if the light conditions turn magical, they can last for several hours.
Moreover, early summer is a perfect time to enjoy the splendor of some of the beautiful flowers found on the islands. At the same time, the impressive green hues typical of the Faroes will be more beautiful than ever. Similarly, rivers, streams, and waterfalls will be flowing with plenty of water. All these conditions will undoubtedly lead to maximum enjoyment of the tour.
Finally, in summer, we will have the chance to photograph the fascinating puffins, the famous birds that inhabit these latitudes at this time of year, characterized by their orange beaks and black and white colors.
This Faroe Islands Photo Tour is of low/intermediate difficulty, so the vast majority of people can join. On the one hand, it is a suitable tour for most fitness levels and all ages. On the other hand, it is a tour suitable for all photographic levels.
Regarding physical condition, a medium fitness level is enough to join the tour. While many of the locations we visit will be easily accessible, we will need to do short to medium-length hikes to reach others. In any case, a high level of fitness is not required, as they are quite easy routes to follow. You just need to be accustomed to walking.
There is no age limit for participating in the tour, as long as you are of legal age and reasonably healthy.
As for photographic skills, no minimum level of photography is required, nor prior experience in taking pictures. The tour is open to all levels, and our photographic guides assist each participant on the ground, providing personalized attention tailored to each person’s level. Lastly, no professional photographic equipment is required, nor is there a minimum equipment requirement to join the tour. You can enjoy the tour with any camera. In any case, there will be a section below with the ideal equipment for this tour, but these are never essential items to participate. The Faroe Islands Photo Tour will begin with the group meeting at Vagar Airport, on the island of the same name, where we will meet in the afternoon on the first day of the trip. After the introduction, we will head to our accommodation in the area, where we will check in and leave our luggage.
Next, we will make our way to our first photographic destination of the trip, in the surroundings of Gasadalur. From this area, we will be able to photograph the spectacular Mulafossur waterfall, one of the most iconic locations in the Faroe Islands, which we can immortalize from the cliffs nearby. This incredible waterfall, which drops directly into the sea, will still have plenty of water at this time of year, providing us with fantastic photographic opportunities.
Given this extraordinary photographic potential, we will spend the rest of the afternoon in the area, and photograph the sunset with this beautiful backdrop. It will be the first chance to enjoy the Midnight Sun during the trip. If we are lucky enough to witness good lighting conditions, these will likely last for hours!
Today we will wake up early to visit the island of Mykines, heading there on the first ferry of the morning. In addition to its spectacular natural landscapes, the island is known for having the largest puffin colony in the Faroe Islands, making it a fantastic opportunity to capture these beautiful birds. Puffins are already quite accustomed to human presence in the area, so it will be relatively easy for us to get fantastic portraits of them, especially with the help of a telephoto lens.
Besides puffins, in Mykines we will be able to photograph many other birds, such as gannets.
However, we will also take advantage of our visit to the island of Mykines to photograph the incredible landscapes of the area, such as its sheer cliffs that drop sharply into the sea, adorned with a splendid green color. Among the island’s scenery, the spectacular Mykinesholmur lighthouse stands out, which can be reached after a somewhat long hike. This is the most famous and photographed lighthouse in the Faroe Islands, surrounded by a stunning environment. Once there, we will evaluate the option to take this route, allowing us to split the group with alternative photographic plans. This way, those who want to photograph the lighthouse and those who prefer not to hike can make the most of it.
For sunset, we will head to visit Sorvagsvatn Lake, next to the cliffs of Traelanipa. To get here, we will need to take another hike, lasting about an hour. However, the route will be well worth it, due to the immense beauty of the surroundings. We will spend the rest of the day here, photographing the sunset and, if the lighting conditions are good, we will wait until dawn (there are only about 3 hours of night, during which it does not get completely dark), taking advantage of an endless blue hour.
If the lighting conditions are favorable the night before, we will stay until dawn on the cliffs of Traelanipa. This way, we will have the opportunity to fully enjoy the enormous possibilities of the surrounding locations. In addition to the aforementioned cliffs, which are highly spectacular, we will have chances to photograph the Bosdalaforssur waterfall, through which Sorvagsvatn Lake drains into the sea.
After sunrise and the golden hour, once the lighting conditions start to worsen, we will return to our accommodation to rest until early afternoon.
After resting, we will head out to photograph another major highlight of the trip, the fabulous Drangarnir arch, surrounded by impressive cliffs. Undoubtedly, this is one of the locations with the greatest photographic potential of the trip. To reach this site, we will have to take a new hike, which will be of medium/high difficulty. Therefore, this plan will be optional, and those who prefer not to hike can stay and relax or explore the surroundings of the accommodation.
However, the hike to the arch is highly recommended, as it is a place with endless photographic possibilities. Once in the area, we will be able to capture unreal views from the top of the cliffs, but we will also go down in front of the arch to capture the stunning frontal view of it as the waves crash against the rocks. Just like the previous day, the idea is to stay in the area until the dawn of the next day, provided the conditions are right, before returning to rest at our accommodation.
As we discussed, if the lighting conditions are favorable, we will start the day at the location where we photographed the previous sunset, in the vicinity of the Drangarnir arch. We will take advantage of the first lights of the day as the golden light floods the spectacular landscapes around us. Again, we will be able to explore endless compositions in the surroundings, both descending to the rocky shoreline with the arch in front of us and from the cliffs around it.
Next, we will head back to our accommodation, where we will rest until lunchtime. After that, we will proceed to photograph Leynasandur beach. Shortly after leaving the beach, we will stop at the nearby Leynavtn and Mjauvotn lakes, where we can capture beautiful images from the inside of the fjord. These locations are on the way to our next sunset spot, in the village of Saksun.
Once we reach the area around the village, we will have a multitude of dreamy views to photograph. We will begin on the outskirts of Saksun, photographing Saksunarvatn Lake at the foot of the mountains. After that, we will approach Ut a Lonna beach, which forms a small estuary resembling a lake, where a beautiful waterfall ends. We will spend the rest of the afternoon in the area, photographing the lovely houses of Saksun at sunset, with their grass-covered roofs.
After the session, we will return to our accommodation to rest.
In the morning, we will visit a mountainous area with spectacular views of the surroundings on the island of Streymoy. To get there, we will travel along a twisting road that will provide us with extraordinary views and compositions of the area.
We will continue our route through Streymoy, the largest island of the Faroe Islands, heading to the village of Tjornuvik. Before arriving, we will have the opportunity to take photos of Fossa waterfall, one of the tallest in the archipelago. Next, we will stop to photograph Haldarsvik, another beautiful village, where we can enjoy views of another stunning waterfall.
Our next stop will be Tjornuvik, an idyllic village at the foot of the fjord, with its lovely beach, where we will spend some time taking photos. Just a few meters away from the village, we will enjoy impressive views of it along with the fabulous fjords that surround it.
In the afternoon, we will travel to Gjogv on the island of Eysturoy. In this area, after visiting the village, we will embark on a new hike to a high point on a hill, from which we will obtain one of the most incredible panoramic views of all the Faroe Islands. In an amazing setting, we will enjoy breathtaking views, with magnificent fjords and the sea in the background. This will be our location for photographing the sunset, after which we will head back to our accommodation to rest.
Today, we will wake up early to photograph the first light of day at another spectacular viewpoint near Funningur, where we will again have an extraordinary view of the sea and the fjords surrounding us. Undoubtedly, this will be another one of those views we will never forget, offering us endless compositional possibilities for our images.
After that, we will go back to sleep for a few more hours (remember that, at this time of year, the sun rises between 3 and 4 a.m. in the Faroe Islands). After that well-deserved rest, we will drive to our new destination, the village of Klaksvik. Here, we will take a ferry to the nearby island of Kalsoy, where we will spend the afternoon.
Once on the island, we will disembark at Sydradalur and drive to the village of Trollanes in the northern part of the island. Along the way, we will be able to enjoy the magnificent surroundings, making stops to photograph some of the most beautiful views we will encounter. Among these, we will highlight another fabulous waterfall, Mikladalur, and the fabulous Kópakonan statue, a statue of a woman inspired by a magical local legend, according to which seals are people who have chosen to live in the sea and, once a year, return to land by shedding their seal skin.
Finally, we will arrive at Trollanes, another picturesque village from where we will walk to our objective for the day, the cliffs to the north of the village. Here, after a short hike, we will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular views of all the Faroe Islands, featuring the beautiful Kallur Lighthouse. The idea for today is to photograph this extraordinary setting at sunset, staying in the area during the magical blue hour until dawn the next day.
As we explained, we will wake up in the same area where we photographed the sunset the previous day, near Trollanes. Again, we will be able to enjoy the magical surroundings of the Kallur Lighthouse, one of the most incredible locations in the Faroe Islands. Here, we will take advantage of the best morning light before resuming our route towards Sydradalur, where we will take the ferry back to Klaksvik.
Once in the village, we will head to our accommodation for some rest. After this time of relaxation, we will embark on the last outing of the trip, visiting Vidareidi on the island of Vidoy. This is the northernmost settlement of all the Faroe Islands and will once again provide us with an impressive setting, surrounded by beautiful fjords and hills, along with steep cliffs.
We will spend the afternoon photographing the area, paying special attention to the picturesque church of Vidareidi, which offers excellent photographic opportunities. After sunset in the area, we will return to our accommodation to rest.
Today, we will head to Vagar Airport, making some photographic stops if the schedule allows. Once we arrive at the airport, this Faroe Islands Photo Tour will come to an end.

This Faroe Islands Photo Tour is recommended for people who are used to walking, as we will undertake several hikes during the trip. We could consider the journey to be of medium level and difficulty, although a high physical fitness level is not required to participate. However, it is important to note that we will do several medium-duration treks during the tour.
On the other hand, there is no age limit, as long as health and fitness levels are reasonably good. It is necessary to keep in mind that on some nights, we will link sunset and sunrise, as there are only about 3 hours between them during this time of year due to our latitude. In those cases, we will sleep afterward during the day.
It is not at all necessary to have a minimum photography level to participate in the trip, nor is it required to be a professional photographer to join. All our Photo Tours are suitable for all levels, even for those who are just starting in photography or simply want to take pictures with a compact camera or even with their mobile phone. Our guides and instructors provide personalized attention to each participant, helping them capture the best images of the destination.
During our Faroe Islands Photo Tour, we can expect average temperatures, with highs of between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius (52 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit) and lows of between 7 and 9 ºC (45 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit) at night. Additionally, it is quite possible that we will encounter wind, which can blow strongly, lowering the perceived temperature. Likewise, we may have some rainy days, so it will be important to be adequately prepared.
For this reason, we recommend dressing in layers. A coat or jacket, such as a down jacket, should be worn, especially at night. Additionally, a Gore-Tex jacket or similar is highly recommended for rainy days and to protect against the wind. Our Faroe Islands Photo Tour does not include any meals (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). This allows us maximum flexibility during the trip to make the most of our time on what matters most to us: photography. Typically, we will have breakfast at the accommodation or in cafés after our sunrise sessions. Then, we will have some lunches and dinners as picnics with items purchased at supermarkets (sandwiches, fruit, snacks, etc.), while on other occasions we will go to restaurants or have meals at our accommodations. In any case, we will have the opportunity to try the fish and seafood of the islands, as well as lamb.
Currently, the main payment option we have is the bank transfer. However, if you prefer it, we also have other payment options, such as credit or debit card, PayPal or Transferwise. During our Faroe Islands Photo Tour, we will stay in mid-range/tourist hotels or guesthouses (3 stars or higher, if available), on a bed-only basis, in a double room shared with another participant in the trip, with a private bathroom. The accommodations are usually of good quality, although it’s true that there are not many options to choose from due to the small size of the populations.
If you are traveling with someone else, you can share the room, but if not, we will assign you a roommate, always of the same sex. In any case, there is an option to book single accommodation for an additional fee.

Although our offices are located in Santander, Spain, our trips are open to participants from anywhere in the world, so we have clients from countries all over the globe. However, Spanish will always be the language used during the trip (sometimes alongside English).

All participants must be at this meeting point on the starting day of the trip, at a time we will determine, which they will need to reach from their place of origin.
