This Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, from February 18 to 25, 2024, with more dates for 2024 and 2025 available soon, is one of our more successful trips. Lofoten, located in Norway, above the Arctic Circle, is a desired destination for anyone who loves photography and Nature. Its idilic locations make the area one of the top destinations on Earth for landscape photography. Among those places, we can talk about stunning fjords, mountains, lakes and wild beaches
All of this, covered in white, due to the huge amounts of snow that this area receives every winter. A magical setting that seems to be taken from a fairy tale. Its beautiful villages will reward us with enchanting views, making you feel as if you were in a wonderland. Magical places which, at the same time, will bring us very good chances to photograph the Northern Lights.
We’ll stay at typical fishermen cabins, renovated as very nice accommodation, something that will add to its charm. Imagine yourself getting out of your cabin, and enjoying the views of the sea and the surrounding fjords. Kind of a dream come true. A photographer’s dream, and the reason why thousands of photography lovers visit the area each year.
We will be mainly focusing on landscape and night photography during the trip, since the area is home to some of the most impressive sceneries all around the world. Here, we will be able to capture spectacular landscape settings, including stunning peaks, amazing fjords, incredible wild beaches and rocky coastlines, as well as mesmerizing views anywhere we go in the islands.
Many of the best photo locations in Lofoten are located around the most beautiful villages in the islands. Places like Hamnoy, Reine, Sakrisoy, Vareid or Leknes, will bring us some of the most extraordinary views that we can imagine. Then, we can highlight some of the lovely wild beaches that we’ll visit, such as Skagsanden, Hauckland or Uttakleiv. Any of these beaches would allow us to stay taking pictures for days, given their many photo possibilities.
But, at the same time, we will enjoy from countless possibilities around the roads that we’ll be driving to move between the locations. Anywhere we go in the area, there will be chances for amazing shots. Furthermore, we will not have long distances to drive, so we’ll have more time for photography.
Besides this, we’ll pay special attention to the nights, since Lofoten is one of the best destinations on Earth for Northern Lights photography. Therefore, we will check the conditions every night, trying to go our the magical Auroras Borealis. Given the high latitude, we will have great chances to capture the magical phenomenon at this time of the year.
There are several reasons to travel to Lofoten during this season, and all of them are related to photography purposes. First of all, we are looking for the nicest winter conditions, trying to capture amazing white sceneries. In this sense, traveling during this time will almost guarantee that we’ll be finding magical wintry white landscapes. Everything will probably be covered by a huge amount of snow, something that will bring us marvelous photo opportunities.
Then, we would like to highlight the precious light that we will be enjoying in February. Being so far North, the sun won’t elevate very much in the sky during the daytime, and therefore light will always be very soft and yellowish. That’s the fabulous Arctic light, perfect for photographers.
Finally, February is one of the best months of the year for the Northern Lights. Because of this, traveling at this time we’ll maximize the chances to photograph this magical phenomenon.
Given all this reasons, we consider that this is probably the best moment of the year for our Lofoten Photo Tour.
Our Lofoten photo tour is suited for all ages, physical conditions and experience levels. All locations are easily accessible, so there is no need for special conditions to join us.
Equally, there is no age limit, anyone can join the trip as long as he or she is reasonably well.

Just join us on this Lofoten Photo Tour, and be one of the 12 fortunate photo lovers that visit the area with us. The Norwegian greatest sceneries and the Northern Lights will be awaiting!
We’ll begin our Lofoten Photo Tour meeting at Leknes Airport, Norway, during the night of this first day. After this, we will get to our accommodation, where we’ll check the chances to see the Northern Lights. If there is a minimum opportunity, we’ll go out to try to photograph them. If not, we’ll rest after a long day of traveling to Lofoten.
Even during the night, we will keep checking the conditions, and we might wake you up in the middle of the night, if there is a good chance to photograph the magical phenomenon.
Today, we’ll wake up early to head to Uttakleiv Beach, for the first sunrise session of the trip. From this amazing location, we’ll capture the impressive fjords in the surroundings, as the sun brings its beautiful golden light. There are hundreds rocks by the shoreline, as well as several precious ponds, which will make for ideal foreground.
After breakfast, we’ll head to the area where we’ll be staying the next days, around Hamnoy and Reine villages. Although the way to our destination can be done in just one hour, we will be doing several stops, since there are dozens of gorgeous photo locations on it. Among these, we’d like to highlight Vareid and Skagsanden Beach.
Once we get to our destination, we will get to our sunset location, the viewpoint next to Reine. Here, we’ll be able to enjoy one of the nicest views in Lofoten. Reine looks so amazing from here, that we have heard some past edition’s customers claiming that this was the most beautiful village they had ever seen. Therefore, we will stay here for sunset and blue hour, enjoying the session as much as possible.
Once the night has come, we’ll leave our luggage in our cabins, and will be ready to go out for Northern Lights chasing.
We’ll head to Hamnoy for sunrise, where we’ll be able to capture one of the nicest views in the area. From its bridge, we’ll shoot the village, with the stunning fjord in the background, as the light hits from the right, creating an amazing atmosphere. This is probably the most photographed view in all Lofoten. However, despite it’s usually quite crowded, we could not skip a sunrise visit to this precious place.
Then, we’ll head to the nearby Sakrisoy village, where we’ll have breakfast. After this, we will explore this small town, paying special attention to the precious cabins by its shoreline. We will also enjoy the amazing emerald tones in the water, while we capture fabulous pictures in the area.
After spending several hours in Sakrisoy, we will get back to Hamnoy for sunset. This time, we will visit a different location by the fjord, again with unforgettable views.
Afterwards, we will go back to the cabins to have dinner, and will keep ready to photograph the Auroras borealis, if there are chances to see them.
Today, we’ll wake up early again, and head back to Sakrisoy for sunrise. Once in the village, we’ll hike to a nearby hill, from which we’ll be able to capture extraordinary views of the surroundings. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most incredible panoramic views in Lofoten. That’s the reason why we’ll spend enough time in this spot, trying to get the best possible pictures.
After this visit, we’ll go to Reine, where we’ll be exploring this precious village. We will photograph some really beautiful fishermen cabins, surrounded by the wonderful peaks of the fjords.
Later, we will go back to Hamnoy, to capture again the area around its bridge but, this time, under the sunset light. We’ll stay there during the sunset and, once the sun has set, we’ll hike a nearby hill, from which we will be able to shoot a precious blue hour panoramic of the scene.
We will stay there until the night has arrived, when we’ll go back to the cabins. As always, if there is a chance of photographing the Northern Lights, we’ll be ready to go out again to capture this incredible natural phenomenon.
We’ll visit back the Reine scenic viewpoint, this time under the sunrise light. Again, this will be one of the most magical views during our trip. This location is particularly beautiful at sunrise so, it we are lucky with the clouds, we could enjoy a great show there, as the soft light brings incredible colors to the scene. All of this, surrounded by the stunning peaks of the fjord.
After our session, we’ll drive West to A, the further village in the islands, and the place where the road ends. During this drive, we will be doing several stops, in order to photograph the most scenic places in the area. We will be able to capture seascapes and rocky coastlines, where the waves will be crashing. At the same time, we’ll be searching for icy formations, specially the precious rock covered in ice, which create a perfect foreground when shooting with a wide angle lens.
For sunset, we’ll drive East of Hamnoy, visiting another location with outstanding potential. If we area lucky with the sky, we’ll have the sun setting in front of us, in the middle of a wonderful scenery. This will be a great chance to practice some panoramic shoots.
We’ll keep in the area if the sky is clear, waiting to capture the Northern Lights. If it’s cloudy, we’ll head back to our accommodation for dinner, but we’ll be ready to go out again if the conditions are good.
Today, we’ll visit a precious wooden bridge in Reine, where we’ll be able to capture wonderful images by dawn. This is another of the most famous photo locations in Lofoten, so we’ll make sure to have plenty of time so you can enjoy it.
During the rest of the day, we’ll keep exploring the area, visiting some remaining spots, and getting back to our favorite ones. We’ll also try to visit places that we already photographed under worse conditions of light.
Then, we’ll visit Skagsanden Beach for sunset. Again, we’ll have quite a lot of time to get the best images in the area, while we wait for the special sunset light. Near the beach, we will also be able to capture the impressive view of the area from outside its cemetery.
Finally, we will try again to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.
Today we’ll leave our accommodation early, to shoot sunrise during our way back to Leknes. Among the locations we will visit, we would like to highlight the beautiful Nusfjord village. This is one of the most famous villages in Lofoten, located at a marvelous area, between the sea and the fjords.
Once we get to Leknes, we will visit another picturesque small town, Ballstad, before heading to Hauckland and Uttakleiv beaches. We’ll stay the rest of the day in these beaches, getting to Uttakleiv for sunset, where we’ll try to be rewarded by the magical sunset light.
After going to our accommodation, we will have dinner and check the sky conditions one more night. If we have any chance, we’ll try the last night photo session, trying to capture the Northern Lights.
Today we’ll wake up early to head to Leknes airport, where this Lofoten Photo Tour will come to its end.
However, depending on the flight schedules of the participants, we might try a last sunrise session, by Hauckland Beach. Then, time depending, we would also visit the nearby Leknes church, particularly beautiful.
For those travelers who were interested, we offer an optional 3 day photo tour extension (3 extra nights).
During the first day of this extension, we will visit other villages in Lofoten, such as Henningsvaer and Svolvaer. During the drive to these villages, we’ll be stopping by several places with fabulous photo opportunities, such as some wonderful lakes.
On the second day, we will get back west, to visit other locations we did not visited when we stayed in the Hamnoy and Reine area. We might also go back to some of the locations we already visited, if light conditions were specially nice.
For the last day, we’ll be visiting many other different sceneries in the Leknes area, including beaches, panoramic views, and coastline locations. Same as every single day during the trip, we’ll have plenty of amazing photo possibilities in all these spots.
Furthermore, we will keep trying our best for cashing the Northern Lights. Therefore, we’ll try to photograph the Auroras every single night, as long as there are minimal chances for it.
You can see the details of this optional extension with the rest of the conditions of the trip.

Leknes Airport, Lofoten, Norway (Google Maps)
We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.
A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the amazing Lofoten Arctic landscapes. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the Northern Lights photography sessions.
An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.
A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm won’t be very useful on this trip. It might be useful to capture some distant sceneries, like distant mountains, but it would also add extra weight to your backpack.
These kind of lenses are not really essential, if you already have a fast wide angle. However, if you already have a lens like a 14mm 1’8 or a 20mm 1’4, it would be perfect for the Northern Lights sessions.
A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.
We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.
Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.
Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Given the cold temperatures, batteries will run much faster than usual. Therefore, you should bring enough batteries to avoid running out of energies.
We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.
This Lofoten Islands Photo Tour is recommended for almost anyone, no matter the age or the physical level to join the trip.
We will be doing only very short and easy hikes during the trip, normally less than 5 minutes. There will be only one location locate a bit further, about a 10 minutes hike, up a hill, but it will not be difficult, and you can always skip this one in case you prefer it. Therefore, you are welcome to come with us as long as you are fine with walking just for a couple of minutes. This will be a mostly easy trip, despite the cold and the snow.
At the same time, there is no age limit for the tour, as well as your health and conditions are reasonably good.
There is no need of a minimal photography level to join this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to come to this trip, nor even having a lot of experience with your camera. All our photo tours are open to all levels, even for beginners, or unexperienced photography users. Sometimes, we even have people just taking shots with their smartphones.
One of our highlights is providing customized attention, so we will help you to get the best possible images, regardless your previous level. We’ll be there to help you becoming a better photographer!
During this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, we can expect very cold temperatures most of the time, although it should not be too hard if we are well prepared. Average temperatures during this period could vary between 14º to 36º Fahrenheit (-10º to 2º Celsius). However, due to the frequent strong winds in the area, it can feel colder. Snow it is also quite possible during this month.
For this reason, you need to be perfectly prepared for a trip like this. You will need a good down jacket or parka, as warm as possible. We also recommend dressing in layers, so you can add or remove layers depending on the temperature. At the same time, a Gore Tex jacket or similar could be also useful, for the snow. Snow boots would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour.
This Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, as most of our trips, doesn’t include meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). This will give us maximum flexibility during the trip, in order to focus mainly in the most important thing: photography.
For this trip, as we will be staying in cabins with their own kitchens, we’ll be buying food at the supermarket. Some of the meals will take place at our cabins, because there are not many restaurants in the area, and most of them are not open at midday. We will be usually having breakfast at the cabins, but then we could have something outside some of the days. Then, since sunset is early, we will normally skipping lunch (we can bring a sandwich or some fruit with us instead), and have dinner at the evening. Most dinners will be at the cabins, but sometimes we’ll visit restaurants too.
Anyway, we will have enough opportunities to enjoy the great Norwegian food. Obviously, the main option will be the great fish in the area, but there are delicious meat alternatives too!
Currently, the main payment option we have is the bank transfer. However, if you prefer it, we also have other payment options, such as credit or debit card, PayPal or Transferwise. Please notice that these other payment options may apply a commission fee. You can ask us about these different payment options.
If you choose to pay by credit or debit card, or by PayPal, you can process your payment online, when you finish the booking process. For bank transfer payment, you just have to proceed with the booking and then, once you finish the process with the chosen payment method, you’ll receive an email with al the instructions and bank details.
During this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, we’ll be normally staying in the typical fishermen cabins. These cabins are renovated with all the modern amenities, and include private bathroom, living room and a full kitchen. Each cabin will be shared by 4 participants, although there will be always separated rooms for 2 people each, with twin beds.
If you come with another person to the trip, we will try to put you in the same cabin and, if possible, in the same room inside the cabin. However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll assign your roommates between the other participants in the trip (always same genre for each room inside the cabin). Anyway, you will also have the chance to choose a single room for you, paying an extra supplement. Contact us for all details.
Anyone can join this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, no matter your country of residence. Our main travel agency is settled in Santander, Spain, but our trips are open to customers from countries all around the world. Therefore, we may have clients from different places in our photo tours.
This Lofoten Islands Photo Tour begins at Leknes Airport, in Norway. Therefore, all the participants have to get there for the first day of the tour, traveling from their country of residence, without having to travel to another country or city to fly to Leknes with us.
Once you have confirmed your booking for this Lofoten Islands Photo Tour, we will send you the trip info with a recommended gear PDF guide. This will include suggestions not only about the photography gear, but also about the clothes and accessories you might need during this photo tour. To sum up, you won’t have to worry about anything, since our expert photo leaders and guides will inform you about everything you will need, so you can enjoy your travel as much as possible!
As a first tip, we would suggest you bringing a light color down or shell jacket(for example red, orange, yellow, light green, etc…). That jacket will protect you from the cold and the rain but, at the same time, you’ll look great when photographed in some of the most beautiful locations around Lofoten!
‘May 2019, in a website offering tours for photography lovers, I can see that I love all of them, and I don’t know which one to choose, but I decide one for the following year, to a more than amazing destination: Lofoten. I talked with one man, Sergio Lanza. From then, we’ll keep regular contact, checking all details for the photo tour. In those distant conversations, the kindness, predisposition, the good details and the cool feeling made everything flowing perfectly, despite I was going to join a group of people I had never met.
And yes, Lofoten is an extremely beautiful area, as well as with extreme conditions too. A place worth visiting several times. But, the best, to go back with this group of close, funny and kind people, as we as excellent professionals. Working non-stop and taking care of all of us, with so much affection that I could never thank them enough. Sergio Lanza and Julio Castro are great photographers but, over all, they are two wonderful guys who love their job and work perfectly, and who end up becoming your friends. There is no way to forget something like that. They also generate a great positive ambient, so all the participants in the trip end up becoming your friends too. Thanks a lot for so much. Certainly, this photo tour exceeded my expectations, and not (not only) because of Lofoten’
‘Lofoten, an unforgettable experience accompanied by two great photographers as Sergio and Julio, always taking care of every single detail during the trip, as well as trying to teach all their photography knowledge. It was a very tight group, enjoying photography and the great company too.
This was my second trip with Dream Photo Expeditions, which will keep being my favorite photo tour company.
Thanks to Sergio and Julio.’
‘When you book a trip like this you know that the price to pay for getting great images will be a lot of preparation, few hours of sleep and much joy. In this particular trip, in which every single corner is postcard worthy, depending on the time and the weather, you really value the effort of the people who is guiding you, because moving back and forth cashing the Northern Lights, capturing reflections is something titanic, really priceless, and therefore not easy to find in any other conventional touristic services.
I remember one sunrise with emotion, it was literally gelid, but as if we were there now again, I remember the feeling and the excitement of all of us when we saw the red tones in the sky and the mountains. Moments like this is why I love Dream Photo Expeditions. Sceneries, expert guides and friends, who become your family. Waiting to meet you again: Katy, Pilar, Sergio, Julio, Marleny, Jesús and Alicia, we’ll meet again in New Zealand, 2021.
I will go back to Lofoten, there is too much to see and many pictures to be taken.’
‘When I decided to travel to Norway to visit the Lofoten Islands, I always knew I’d do the trip with Dream Photo Expeditions. Regardless how lucky you may be with the weather when you travel to a destination like this, traveling with people that really worry about you, and who, over all, are trying to make you feel as part as their family, is very important. As important as the sceneries and the areas that they can take you to during the trip. About the Lofoten Islands, I can only say that is one of the most impressive places where I have ever been. Our guides have been taking us to the most impressive locations in the islands. If you are thinking about visiting Lofoten, I would just recommend you to travel with this photography beasts… who are even better people than photographers.’
