Our North of Spain Photo Tour, from August the 20 to the 27th, 2023, will be a great chance to photograph some of the most scenic locations in the area. During a week, we will be visiting incredible cliffs, beaches and seascapes in the Costa Cantábrica. But, apart from it, we will also photograph incredible forests, waterfalls and mountain landscapes.
We will travel through three different provinces during these eight days, Cantabria, Asturias and Vizcaya (in the Basque Country). We have planned a very complete itinerary for the trip, so each day you’ll be able to photograph several incredible sceneries.
The tour is focused in landscape photography, paying special attention to seascapes. We will visit some of the most impressive beaches, cliffs and rocky coastlines all around Spain. Some of the beaches we will visit include Barrika, Arnía, Gueirúa or El Silencio, amazing locations for photography. We will also photograph stunning cliffs and rocky areas, such as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Costa Quebrada, or the magical coastline in Asturias. But, furthermore, we will visit precious forests, as Otzarreta or Ucieda, beautiful villages, like San Vicente de la Barquera, Llanes or Lastres, and the spectacular mountains in the Picos de Europa National Park.
Joining our summer edition of the Northern Spain Photo Tour, you will be able to enjoy from many hours of daylight, which will allow us to visit many different locations each day. At the same time, we will visit forests and dark locations during the worst hours of light. At the same time, we usually get nice sunrises and sunsets during that time of the year, so that’s a great reason to go during the summertime.
This Northern Spain Photo Tour is recommended for anyone, regardless your age, your photographic level or your physical condition (as long as you are able to walk short distances). If you like landscape photography and love seeing and capturing amazing views and sceneries, we totally recommend you this trip.
We offer you a whole week of photography in one of Spain’s most amazing areas. During each day of the tour, we will get countless opportunities to capture fantastic images, while we enjoy from the views and the food of the Northside.
Everything will be organized by our professional travel agency for photography lovers, with more than 40 photo tours and 5 years of experience, and guided by professional photographers as our tour leaders.

Our North of Spain Photo Tour, along the Costa Cantábrica area, will begin with the meeting of the group in Bilbao. We will set two different meeting points, one at the downtown, and another one at the airport.
After meeting up, we will drive to our accommodation, and then will visit Sopelana Beach, with its beautiful cliffs and incredible views. Afterwards, we’ll head to one of the most spectacular locations of the whole trip, the amazing Barrika Beach. This world famous beach, has some impressive rock formations, the flysch, which will bring us extraordinary possibilities for composition. Probably, we are talking about one of the most beautiful beaches for photography all around the world. We will stay there during the sunset, searching for the best possible lights.
Finally, we’ll get back to our hotel to sleep.
We will wake up early to drive to Otzarreta forest, where we’ll enjoy our first sunrise session of the trip. This wonderful beech forest is a top location for photographers all around the world, so we’ll get early to make sure we’ll take the best spots. At the same time, we will have enough time to enjoy the area, spending between two and three hours in the forest.
After breakfast, we will visit Bilbao downtown, focusing on its most famous and photogenic location, the famous Guggenheim Museum. Certainly, this is the most photographed building in the area, so we’ll have plenty of time t to capture the museum from different points and perspectives.
In the evening, we will move to another top destination for photography, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. This location, famous for being featured in ‘Game of Thrones’, includes a tiny chapel on top of a rocky island, in an outstanding setting, surrounded by the sea and by spectacular cliffs. We will photograph the sunset in the area, enjoying the last lights of the day, before getting back to our hotel.
Today, we’ll leave the hotel early, heading to our next destination, Sonabia, in Cantabria. We will photograph sunrise from a rocky area known as ‘The Whale’, due to its shape. During this session, we’ll find beautiful flowers and rock formations, which will bring us fantastic composition options.
After having breakfast, we will continue driving to Costa Quebrada, an impressive coastline full of stunning cliffs and rocky formations, where we will be able to get a lot of spectacular pictures.
First of all, we will visit the beautiful Valdearenas and Canallaves beaches, located by a wonderful pinewood. We will take some images by the beaches, before photographing the beautiful sand dunes in Valdearenas. Secondly, we will get to El Madero Beach, in the middle of a rocky area, with beautiful flysch to compose outstanding pictures again. Finally, we will visit Los Urros cliffs for sunset. This is probably the most famous area for photography in Cantabria, so we will have plenty of time to enjoy it. The rock formations known as ‘urros’ will bring us endless possibilities, and we’ll capture sunset in from of the most famous one, La Puerta del Mar, literally ‘The Door of the Sea.’
We will end up the day getting to our hotel for a well deserved rest.
We will visit Arnía Beach early in the morning, to capture the sun rising in front of us. This is a really precious beach, with many rocks to search for great compositions.
Later, we will drive to Ucieda forest, a truly magnificent area, where we will enjoy photographing the trees, as well as some creeks and little waterfalls. After this visit, we will head to the coastline again, visiting the beautiful area of Suances and Tagle. One more time, we’ll be surrounded by fabulous cliffs, something that will bring us fantastic photo opportunities. We will also visit the Bolao falls, a small waterfall in the area next to the sea.
Finally, we will get back to the Costa Quebrada cliffs, visiting another spectacular area for sunset.
Today, we’ll photograph sunrise from the flysch area in the Costa Quebrada, over Arnía Beach. There are usually some flowers in the location, which will be useful as our foreground, with the stunning cliffs and surroundings in the background.
We will have breakfast after our sunrise session, and then we will visit Santander, where we will photograph El Camello Beach, with La Magdalena Peninsula in the background. Before leaving the city, we will stop by the Botín Centre, to practice some architecture photography.
After visiting Santander, we will head to the Liébana Valley, in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. Liébana is an amazing area, full of beauty and surrounded by the impressive Picos de Europa peaks. We’ll visit some of its most impressive spots, such as us Fuente Dé, and Santo Toribio de Liébana.
Finally, we’ll leave the area to head to our sunset destination, San Vicente de la Barquera. We’ll get to to a small lighthouse next to the beach, where we will practice some long exposure photography, using ND filters.
We will drive to Llanes for sunrise, visiting the famous Castro de las Gaviotas, a precious rock in the middle of the sea. We will stay by the cliffs in front of the rock, waiting for the sunrise, to capture the beautiful surroundings.
Next, we will drive west to visit some of the most beautiful villages in Asturias, Ribadesella and Lastres. We will photograph the stunning views of Lastres and its surroundings from a mount next to the village, from which we will enjoy the incredible emerald color of the sea.
After lunch, we’ll visit Avilés, where we will photograph its famous Niemeyer Museum. Time to practice some architecture photography again, playing with shapes and perspectives. This will be a great opportunity to get some long exposure shots, with the help of ND filters.
Later, we will head to our accommodation, to leave our luggage and have a short time to rest. After that, we will visit El Silencio Beach, one of the most famous and photographer locations in Asturias, where we’ll spend the rest of the day. We will photograph the sunset from the cliffs over the beach, practicing some long exposure shots. If lucky, we will be able to enjoy a beautiful sunset from this impressive location, before getting back to sleep at our hotel.
Once again, we will wake up early for sunrise. This time, we will head to Gueirúa Beach, a stunning location where we will get after a short hike from the village. Once at the beach, we’ll have spectacular rocks and flysch, that will bring us outstanding possibilities for composition. At the same time, the sun will be rising in front of us, so, depending on weather, we’ll have extraordinary conditions for this session.
Afterwards, we will visit Cudillero, one of the most beautiful villages in Asturias. We will take some pictures in the harbor, as well as some panoramic views of the village, with its colorful houses, in many different colors.
Then we will visit some forest areas and creeks, before getting to Luarca, another beautiful town, near the border with Galicia. First of all, we will photograph the views of the town from its beautiful cemetery, as well as from above its harbor. Then, we’ll get to the harbor, looking for some shoots between the boats. Finally, we’ll leave the village and head to Portizuelo Beach for sunset. This beach, East to Luarca, features stunning rocky lines and formation, being a perfect setting for photography.
Once the night has come, we’ll get back to our hotel.
Today, we’ll wake up early and drive East to Bilbao, where this North of Spain Photo Tour will come to its end.
This Northern Spain Photo Tour is recommended for anyone, no matter the physical level to join the trip. As long as you are able to walk for a short hike with no problems, you are welcome to join us on this photo tour. Most of the photo locations are located just a short walk from the places where we’ll park, meaning this will be an easy trip. There are just a couple of locations around a 15 or 20 minute hike (one way) from the parking, but it will be easy hikes (and you always have the choice of skipping that session!). At the same time, there are not age limits for the tour, as well as your health and conditions are reasonably good.
There is no need of a minimal photography level to join this photo tour. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to come to this trip, nor even having a lot of experience with your camera. All our photo tours are open to all levels, even for beginners, or unexperienced photography users. Sometimes, we even have people just taking shots with their smartphones. One of our highlights is providing customized attention, so we will help you to get the best possible images, regardless your previous level. We’ll be there to help you becoming a better photographer!
For the summer edition of our North of Spain Photo Tour, we can expect quite warm temperatures most of the daytime. However, please notice that many of our sessions are held at sunrise, sunset or during the night, so temperatures will be much cooler then. Therefore, we recommend you bringing a light jacket, like a fleece or a softshell one. For most of the time, the best choice will be wearing light and fresh clothes, like summer mountain clothes, easy-drying t-shirts and light trousers. A Gore Tex jacket or similar could be also useful, in case of rain. Mountain boots would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this North of Spain Photo Tour.
This North of Spain Photo Tour, as most of our trips, doesn’t include meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). This will give us maximum flexibility during the trip, in order to focus mainly in the most important thing: photography. Normally, we will be having breakfast in the hotel or in cafes near the area, before or after our sunrise shooting session (depending on timing). For lunch, sometimes we’ll be stopping at restaurants, but other times we’ll be going to a supermarket and doing a picnic near to the locations we’ll visit. Then, we will have dinner at the hotel or in town.

During this North of Spain Photo Tour, we’ll be normally staying in 3 or 4 stars hotel. Each traveller will be staying in a double twin shared room, staying with another participant of the tour. Rooms will always include a private bath.
If you come with another person to the trip, you’ll share the room, However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll choose a roommate for you between the other participants in the trip (always same genre). Anyway, you will also have the chance to choose a single room for you, paying an extra supplement. Contact us for all details.
Anyone can join this North of Spain Photo Tour, no matter your country of residence. Our main travel agency is settled in Santander, Spain, but our trips are open to customers from countries all around the world. Therefore, we may have clients from different places in our photo tours.
This North of Spain Photo Tour, as all our tours, begins in a location in the destination country, normally at the airport. Therefore, all the participants need to get there for the first day of the tour, traveling from their country of residence, and there is no need of traveling to a particular town to fly together.
Once you have confirmed your booking for this North of Spain Photo Tour, we will send you the trip info with a recommended gear PDF guide. This will include suggestions not only about the photography gear, but also about the clothes and accessories you might need during this photo tour. To sum up, you won’t have to worry about anything, since our expert photo leaders and guides will inform you about everything you will need, so you can enjoy your travel as much as possible!
As a first tip, we would suggest you bringing a light color jacket for sunrises and sunsets (for example red, orange, yellow, light green, etc…). That jacket will protect you from the cold but, at the same time, you’ll look great to be photographed in some of the most beautiful locations around the North of Spain!
