SCOTLAND PHOTO TOUR DETAILS

This Scotland Photo Tour, with two departures, on March and September, 2024, is one of our most spectacular landscape workshops in Europe. Land of impressive sceneries, including both mountain landscapes and seascapes, Scotland is one of those essential destinations for any photography lover. On this photo adventure, you’ll be taken through the most spectacular locations in Scotland during 10 days.

Not many destinations on Earth offer so much beauty as Scotland does. Both its natural landscapes and the impressive architecture of its castles, will bring us excellent photo opportunities. All this, while you learn and improve your photography. Always guided by our professional photo instructors, who count with plenty of experience in the destination, and with the services our own travel agency for photography lovers. We count with more than 5 years of experience organizing more than 40 photo tours and workshops.

We are sure you’ll love this experience, as well as the beautiful places we will be visiting. Every single day, we will be living amazing moments, while we search for the best possible light conditions. Although the Scotland weather can be quite unpredictable, we will keep exploring every location, trying to make the most of it. At the same time, rainy or stormy conditions, will often reward us with the greatest light shows! We’ll make sure to be always ready to get all that Scotland has to offer from a photographic point of view.

What to photograph during this Scotland Photo Tour?

This Scotland photo workshop will be totally focused on landscape photography. As we already stated, Scotland is such an incredible country, that we will have constant chances to get spectacular pictures during every single day of the trip. We are talking about a Nature wonder, home to some of the most stunning sceneries all around the world, which you’ll be able to explore during this photo adventure. At the same time, we will be also photographing many of its enchanting castles, including them in our compositions, surrounded by the lovely Scotland sceneries.

Among the locations we will visit, we can highlight many fabulous waterfalls, stunning mountains and peaks, precious forests, or lovely beaches and cliffs. And, of course, we will photograph many of the spectacular lakes in the area, including the world famous Loch Ness. One of the areas where we’ll spend more time is the extraordinary Isle of Skye, a true paradise for any landscape photographer.

During our route around the country, we’ll have endless chances to stop for a picture. Sadly, we will not be able to stop as many times as we’d like to, but we will certainly have lots of opportunities to capture the incredible surroundings.

Apart from the natural landscapes, we will focus on the lovely Scottish castles. We’ll be visiting many of them during the trip, which will be a perfect subject to include in our compositions. You’ll surely have seen hundreds of images of these castles in the middle of impressive natural sceneries. Well, know you’ll be the one having the chance to get those incredible pictures.

Why doing this Scotland Photo Tour during this time of the year?

During our early June trip, we’ll be enjoying late spring season, and everything will be covered by green grass, allowing us to capture wonderful contrasty images.

At the same time, by mid September, we will be able to get the first fall colors in Scotland, the main reason to set the dates for this Scotland photo tour. Meanwhile, the weather will not probably be so bad as may be in October or November. This way, we’ll have high chances to get the beautiful yellowish and reddish tones on the fields and the mountainside, allowing to capture surreal images.

As stated, September is not usually such a rainy month as October or November, which would bring us better chances to maximize our time photographing the destination. Anyway, it would be really strange to visit Scotland for 10 days with no rain at all. Therefore, we’ll be ready for rain, and will keep searching for the great photo opportunities that bad weather may also bring.

Finally, both seasons would be out of the peak season in the country, avoiding the large amounts of tourists typical of July and August. This way, we’ll be able to enjoy as much as possible on our shooting locations.

Who is this Scotland Photo Tour for?

This Scotland photo tour is a very easy to do trip, not involving long or complicated hikes, and being suitable for anyone who loves photography.

First of all, there is no minimum physical level required to join us on this trip. We will be doing some hikes during our photo tour, but they will normally be easy and not so long hikes, not requiring a high physical level to do them.

DAY 3

We’ll leave Glencoe early in the morning, to get to the Etive Mor falls for sunrise. This is another of the top locations around the country, and will bring us impressive photo opportunities, as the sunlight illuminates the area.

After sunrise, we’ll continue our way to our next destination. However, we will be stopping several times along our way. One of the most remarkable visits will take place at Glenfinnan Viaduct, world famous because of the stream train that passes over it. If lucky, we will be able to photograph this precious train, best known as ‘the Harry Potter train’.

Afterwards, we’ll continue our way to another of the most awaited locations during this Scotland photo tour, the Eilean Donan Castle. Located by Loch Duich, we are talking about one of the top landmarks in this beautiful country. We’ll stay in the area for the rest of the day, photographing the location by sunset. DAY 5

We’ll wake up early to get to another of the top locations of this Scotland photo tour, The Old Man of Storr. This wonderful rock formation, as well as The Needle, are located at the foot of the impressive mountain known as The Storr, all in an amazing scenery.

The area is around a half and hour drive from Portree, and once we get there, we’ll have to hike for another half an hour. Therefore, we’ll have to get early enough to make the most of the session. However, be sure it will be totally worth it! We’ll get the reward of photographing one of the most amazing natural areas in Scotland, with spectacular panoramic views of the region.

Alternatively, for those who don’t want to do the whole hike, we will give the option of keeping taking pictures near the parking area.

After this visit, we will get to the nearby Loch Fada and Loch Leathan, very close to the coast. We’ll be searching for great compositions around these lakes, with the impressive The Storr and The Old Man of Storr in the background.

Finally, we will get to another incredible area of Skye, Fairy Glen. This magical location features precious rounded hills and mounds that seem to be taken from a fairytale. We’ll stay in the area for sunset, making the most from the endless photo opportunities we’ll have here.

DAY 6

Today, we’ll have to wake up very early again, to head to the Fairy Pools, a fantastic area with crystal clear blue pools and falls, which will allow us to get wonderful photos. Here, we’ll be able to practice long exposure photography, using neutral density filters. This way, we will get very different effects on the water, depending on the shutter speed used.

This area of the River Brittle, at the foot of the Cuillin Mountains, features amazing photographic potential, so we’ll stay there during most part of the morning.

Afterwards, we will head to the following spot, another of the most amazing locations in Scotland, Neist Point, and the impressive Neist cliffs. For many, this is the most spectacular location in the Isle of Skye, and even in all Scotland. From a photographic point of view, the area is kind of a paradise for photo lovers, with amazing views of the surroundings, that will take our breath away!

We’ll spend the rest of the day at the cliffs, photographing sunset from the area. As the sun is setting by the horizon, we’ll be able to capture extraordinary pictures of the cliffs and the beautiful lighthouse in the background. There will be infinite possibilities to get fantastic images around us, so we’ll make sure to explore all the possibilities. Undoubtedly, this will be one of the most fruitful moments of the trip.

After blue hour, we will get back to our accommodation, to rest after a very intense day.

One more day, we’ll get up early to get to another incredible location, from where we’ll capture sunrise. This time, we’ll visit Mealt Falls, a wonderful 180 foot (55 meter) high waterfall by the Kilt Rock cliffs, that falls directly into the sea.

After exploring the area for enough time, we’ll have breakfast and head to the next destination, not so far away, the Quiraing area. We’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the surroundings of this mountainous region, with its beautiful greenish tones mossy rocks and amazing rock formations.

We will hike to some of the most remarkable spots in the region, but stopping constantly to photograph the wonderful views and details around us. Among those spots, we should highlight some rock formations, such as The Needle, The Table or The Prison, apart from lakes, valleys and hills.

After photographing sunset from Quiraing, we will get back to our accommodation to sleep.

DAY 8

Today, we’ll leave early our accommodation and drive to our sunrise location, Loch Nan Eilean. If there is no wind, we will be able to capture the wonderful reflections of the mountains over the lake.

For sunrise, we will visit probably the most famous locations in Scotland, the world famous Loch Ness. Despite it will not be one of the most beautiful lakes we will visit during our trip, it will bring us also great photo possibilities, apart from the chance to explore this magical place, searching for the mythical lake monster.

After photographing sunset by the lake, we’ll continue our way to our accommodation, in Glencoe.

This will be our last full day in Scotland, so we’ll wake up early again, this time to photograph some of the lakes near Glencoe at sunrise.

General Considerations

This Scotland Photo Tour is organized by the Official Travel Agency ‘Viajes Fotográficos – Dream Photo Expeditions’ ( hereinafter referred to as ‘the travel agency’).

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we offer, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itinerary shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photo guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

Documentation

Each traveler is responsible of having all the documentation needed for the trip, as well as for entering the destination/s. To visit Scotland, you need a valid Passport and might need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the country. Always check the requirements with your country authorities before traveling to a foreign destination. The photographers and the travel agency have no responsibility about each traveler’s documentation, or about the requirements to be allowed to enter in Scotland or any other country.

Travel Insurance

This Scotland Photo Tour includes a basic assistance insurance. However, we strongly recommend you to bring a full travel insurance, which has unlimited or high limit money coverages in case of accident or disease.

Personal Counseling

The travel agency will give personal counseling and advice to travelers when purchasing their trip. Customers will receive a list with everything that they might need for the route, tips about how to prepare a medical kit for the travel, recommendations about the photography gear for the place, etc… At the same time, our staff will be happy to help and solve any doubt that the clients could have while they are preparing their trip.

Responsability

We are completely sure that this Scotland Photo Tour will be an unforgettable experience for travelers, as well as an intensive learning process. The travel agency will always try to promote values such as respect (cultural, social and environmental). Those values will always prevail in all our trips. At the same time, ‘Dream Photo Expeditions’ will always ensure that the impact of their trips is never negative for the country, their citizens or their wildlife.

The travel agency, tour leaders, guides, or the photographers hosting the trip, will have no responsibility at all for any accident, loss, theft or damage suffered by the customers participating on it.

Each customer declares that he or she accepts all the conditions on this trip at the time he or she is doing a reservation request and/or payment for it.

Payment

At the moment of booking, the client will be required to send an initial payment of US$600 (US$863 if choosing single room). Payments can be done by bank transfer, by credit or debit card, and by PayPal. However, please notice that credit or debit card and PayPal payments are subject to a supplement fee, to cover the costs of these payment methods.

The remaining balance will be due 60 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

Cancelations

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

However if the client doesn’t show or cancels the trip, the following cancellation policies will be applied:

– Less than 60 days prior to the trip: US$600 (US$863 in case they had chosen single room basis).
– Greater than 60 days prior to the trip: 100% of the trip cost.

Prices are based in the Exchange rates by September, the 10th, 2020. The currency may be updated until 21 days prior to the departure, according to Spanish Travel Laws, applying a supplement/discount in case of change.

Once the reservation is done by the client, and the services and their prices are confirmed by us, these prices only could be revised until 20 calendar days prior to the departure dates, only in case there are variations in the transportation costs (including the fuel prices), in accommodations, in rates and taxes referring to certain services (such as landing, boarding in ports and airports), or in monetary exchange rates applied to the trip.

RECOMMENDED PHOTO GEAR

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

Camera

DSLR or MIRRORLESS CAMERA RECOMMENDED

We recommend you bringing a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can also join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the impressive Scottish landscapes. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the night photography sessions.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 70-200MM

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm might be very useful on this trip. It will allow us capturing some distant sceneries, like distant mountains, but it will also add extra weight to your backpack.

TRIPOD

A STURDY TRIPOD

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

REMOTE CONTROLLER OR INTERVALOMETER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

ND, GRADUATED AND POLARIZER FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

MEMORY CARDS

ENOUGH MEMORY CARDS

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.
