ALASKA PHOTO TOUR DETAILS

This Alaska photo tour, from August the 8th to the 21st, 2021, is one of our top adventures for Nature photography lovers. Also known as ‘The Last Frontier’, Alaska is one of the most amazing and wild places on Earth. Home to dozens of wildlife species, as well as for some of the most spectacular landscapes around North America, it has endless possibilities from a photographic point of view.

During almost two weeks, we will be visiting some of the most scenic areas in Alaska, exploring all the beauty of this incredible state. Both landscape and wildlife photo opportunities may happen anywhere in Alaska. Therefore, this photo tour will allow you to capture impressive images of this wonderful state. All this, while you learn and improve your photography, accompanied by our expert photo instructors, and with the organization by our travel agency for photo enthusiastic.

Alaska always evoques freedom, Nature, wildlife, and vast sceneries. Once you get there, you’ll be able to experience all those concepts, living the real Alaska. Of course, Alaska is even wilder than most of the places we’ll be able to see, since we will be focusing in the most accessible area of the state. However, this will be more than enough to realize the kind of place Alaska is.

What to photograph during this Alaska Photo Tour?

There are two main subjects we’ll be photographing during this Alaska photo tour, landscapes and wildlife. The Last Frontier is world famous for both, so we are sure you’ll be getting hundreds of great images from this trip.

First of all, all of us have seen images or videos from Alaska. Home to some of the most incredible landscapes in the planet, Alaskan Nature’s wonder will take your breath away. We’ll be able to photograph many of the natural phenomenons in the state, although everything in Alaska is picture worthy! Among the places we will visit, we should highlight some of the most famous landmarks in Alaska, such as the stunning Denali peak, formerly known as Mount McKinley, in Denali National Park, the incredible fjords Around Valdez and Seward, or the amazing Matanuska Valley.

However, anywhere we head in Alaska, we’ll have spectacular sceneries around us. Pristine lakes, fabulous forests, wonderful glaciers, beautiful rivers and waterfalls, outstanding mountains… All Alaska is a natural paradise, and we’ll be always ready to capture its best views! Although we will pay special attention to sunrise and sunsets, the best moments of light every day, we will keep taking pictures during the whole day while on the trip.

Apart from its landscapes, Alaska is a top destination for wildlife photography. Anywhere in Alaska, literally, we could find some of the state’s amazing wildlife. From black and grizzly bears, to the impressive moose, or the precious bald eagles, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to photograph wildlife during our photo tour. We also know several hot spots where we’ll have special chances to photograph some of this wildlife, so we’ll try our best during the trip to help you photographing these beautiful animals.

Why doing this Alaska Photo Tour during this time of the year?

Hosting this Alaska photo tour at this time of the year is a great choice to combine the best options for landscape and wildlife photography. By one hand, all the roads will still be open, while the landscapes will look great. During the last days of the photo tour, we might be even able to see some of the first fall colors!

At the same time, we’ll have plenty of daylight each day, while sunrise and sunset times will be at reasonable hours.. If we did the trip a month earlier, there would not me more than 3 or 4 hours of darkness, due to the latitude.

Furthermore, it will be a great moment for spotting wildlife. We will be probably able to photograph grizzly and black bears near some of the locations we will visit, while they search for salmon. Same for moose, which we may be able to spot almost anywhere during our trip. And we’ll be surely able to photograph the wonderful bald eagles even in towns like Seward, Homer or Valdez.

Who is this Alaska Photo Tour for?

Our Alaska photo tour is considered a very easy to do trip, suitable for any Nature and photography lover. There is no age limit to join the trip, as well as no minimum physical or photographic experience level required to participate.

First of all, there will not be long or difficult hikes during the trip, with most of the shooting locations being less than a five minute walk from the places we’ll be parking at. Therefore, there is no minimum physical level required to join the trip

Then, as previously stated, there is no age limit to participate. Given this, anyone is welcome to join this trip, as long as they are reasonably healthy.

Finally, there is no minimum photographic level or experience required to come with us. This photo tour is recommended to any photography lover, regardless the level or previous experience. Whether you are a beginner, a professional photographer, or an advanced one, you will be welcome to join the trip. Our photo guides will bring you personalized attention, trying to help you capturing the best possible images of Alaska, always adjusted to your needs and level.

At the same time, you don’t need to bring an expensive full photography gear to join us. Although we include a ‘Recommended Gear’ section below, it’s just a list of items which would make for a perfect gear list. However, you will be able to join us regardless your photo gear. Even with a small compact camera, or with your smartphone, you’ll be welcome to participate, and you’ll get wonderful pictures too!

DAY 1

The group will meet at Ted Stevens International Airport, Anchorage. From there, we’ll head to our hotel to leave our luggage. After that, we’ll go out to capture the first pictures of this trip.

We’ll head to the surroundings of the city for sunset, being able to capture its skyline from the coast. We’ll also photograph the Lake Hood area where the largest floatplane airport is located.

DAY 2

Today, we’ll leave early in the morning, to head to Seward, in the Kenai Peninsula. We’ll stop to photograph sunrise during our way, in the Turnagain Arm section.

After that, we’ll also stop by the amazing Portage Lake, enjoying the beautiful sceneries around it. Certainly, this will be one of the most beautiful spots along our way to Seward. We’ll have breakfast in the area before continuing our route. We’ll also do other stops before arriving to Seward, photographing places like Moose Pass or the beautiful Kenai Lake.

Once we get to Seward, we’ll leave our luggage in the accommodation and will get to photograph the town surroundings. We’ll be able to capture beautiful images of the amazing Resurrection Bay, as well as the stunning fjords around town. For sunset, we’ll get to the Exit Glacier area, one of the most fantastic locations around Seward.

After this, we’ll get back to our accommodation to sleep.

DAY 3

We’ll wake up early to get to our sunrise location, near Exit Glacier. We’ll be visiting a viewpoint with extraordinary views of the glacier, from where we’ll be able to capture great shoots of it.

After breakfast, we’ll hace the possibility of an optional boat excursion by Resurrection Bay (not included in price). This excursion would allow us to get to some of the incredible glaciers in the bay, photographing them from the boat. The glaciers we’d visit would probably be Aialik and Holgate ones. From the boat, we’d be able to capture the stunning glaciers, as well as the icebergs floating on the bay. If lucky, we’ll even presence how huge peaces of ice fall from the glaciers!

Apart from taking images of the glaciers, we’ll be able to capture images of the wildlife around the bay. During that cruise, we’ll probably spot species such as sea otters, whales, sea lions, golden eagles or puffins, to name just a few.

After the excursion, we’ll head to the coast to photograph the fjords by sunset. Once the night has arrived, we’ll get back to our accommodation.

DAY 4

Again, we will wake up early to photograph the bay by sunrise, as the early morning light illuminates the amazing fjords. After that, we’ll head to Homer, our next destination.

During the way, we’ll do several stops, to photograph some of the beautiful landscapes we’ll be driving by. Some of these places include the Kenai Lake and the same named river, with their impressive emerald colors.

Once we get to Homer, we’ll leave our luggage at our hotel, before visiting the Homer Spit area, at the end of the town. From here, we’ll be able to enjoy the extraordinary views of the surroundings, capturing fabulous pictures of the precious Kachemak Bay

We’ll head to one of the beaches in the area for sunset, photographing the fjords and mountains in the background. At the same time, we might be able to spot some of the bald eagles that live in this region.

DAY 5

Today we’ll have an optional visit to photograph grizzly bears (not included in price). This will be certainly one of the highlights of the trip, since we will be able to get wonderful images of grizzly bears in their habitat. Therefore, we would totally recommend you to hire this excursion.

After photographing sunrise from a lake in Homer, we’ll get to our departure location, probably by the lake itself, and get ready for the excursion. To get to our bear viewing destination, we’ll have to fly by floatplane, which will take us to the true wild Alaska. Regardless the place we finally visit, we will be able to enjoy from outstanding views already from the flight. Depending on the bear activity, we might visit the world famous Brooks Falls, in Katmai National Park (where several grizzly bears may be trying to fish salmon by the falls), Chinitna Bay, or Lake Clark Nationak Park. All three options are top locations for bear sighting and photography, and we’ll make the most from any of these visits.

Depending on the final group size, the bear activity and other logistic procedures, we might need to divide into different excursions, and/or even of different times during this day.

Alternatively, if we decided not to do the excursion, we would be drive the road along Kachemak Bay, where we’ll be able to photograph the bay from several scenic points. After that, we would head to Anchor Point, from where we’ll enjoy the amazing views of Katmai National Park in the background, with its stunning snowy peaks and volcanos.

Once the night has arrived, we will get back to our accommodation.

viaje fotografico Alaska

DAY 6

We will leave the town very early in the morning, beginning our way back to Anchorage and then to the Matanuska Valley. Although we will have a quite long drive, we will be doing some photo stops along the way. Among these locations, we would highlight the Russian River and, specially, Portage Lake.

We’ll try to get to the Matanuska Valley by the afternoon, to be able to visit the spectacular Matanuska Glacier (not included in price). During this visit, we’ll be able to hike on the glacier, while we take fantastic pictures of the amazing ice.

After exploring the glacier, we will head to a nearby viewpoint, with wonderful views of the glacier and the mountains in the surroundings. From this spot, we will get extraordinary images, as the last rays of sunlight illuminate the scenery. Once it’s dark, we will head to our accommodation to rest.

DAY 7

Today, we’ll wake up early for sunrise, heading to a nearby scenic viewpoint, being able to photograph a precious lake surrounded by trees. Over the area, it’s quite common the presence of mist, which would add an incredible atmosphere to our session.

After breakfast, we will continue our way to Valdez through the Glennallen Highway. We’ll visit some spectacular locations during our route, such as Lake Louise, Willow Lake or the Wrangell St. Elias National Park area. But we were also to stop almost anywhere by the road, to photograph the spectacular sceneries around us.

Once we arrive to Valdez, already in the afternoon, we’ll head directly to Solomon’s Gulch, where, if lucky, we might be able to photograph grizzly and/or black bears as they search for salmon. We’ll photograph a nearby location for sunset, with the precious fjords in the background, before getting to our accommodation.

viaje fotografico Alaska

DAY 8

For our first full day in Valdez, we’ll begin getting up early to capture sunrise by Valdez Glacier. Here, we’ll enjoy a glacial lake that has formed in the area, to photograph the icebergs and their reflections on the water.

Then, we’ll head again to Solomon’s Gulch, to search for bears. We will really have good chances to photograph bears around this road, so we’ll be doing several visits to the area during the trip. We may also spot the impressive bald eagle here, so we’ll be paying special attention to the trees and the sky too.

After some hours, we’ll get back to Valdez, for a visit around town. We will take you to the most photogenic locations, such as the port and the rocky beach next to it. Both locations will bring us mesmerizing views of the fjord and the Prince William Sound.

Finally, we will visit the Keystone Canyon, outside Valdez, and the beautiful Bridal Veil and Horsetail Falls. In these lovely falls, we’ll have the chance to practice long exposure photography, while we use neutral density filters. We’ll get back to town for sunset, stopping by a precious marshy area, looking for the extraordinary reflections of the fjords on the water. Certainly, an incomparable spot to photograph sunset!

DAY 9

We’ll wake up early again for sunrise, visiting a different location in the Valdez surroundings.

After this, we’ll have another optional boat cruise into the Prince William Sound (not included in price). Similar as the one we have in Seward, it will be a wonderful opportunity to photograph the magical glaciers and fjords on the bay, as well as the incredible wildlife around Valdez. Again, bald eagles, sea lions, whales, sea otters or puffins might be seen during the excursion.

As an alternative to the boat excursion, we would head to Thompson Pass, where we would hike around the area, exploring the lakes in the surroundings.

Before twilight, we will head back to Solomon’s Gulch, to search for bears one more time and, afterwards, to photograph the panoramic views around town from the bay.

DAY 10

Today, we will leave Valdez after sunrise, heading back to Matanuska Valley. After about half an hour, we will get to Worthington Glacier, very close to the road. We’ll stop there to hike for some minutes near the glacier, being even able to get to the ice and touch it!

Besides visiting the glacier, we will stop at some other locations around Thompson Pass. Here, we will be able to photograph some pristine alpine lakes, as well as spectacular views of the sceneries around us. In fact, some locals compare Valdez with Switzerland, due to its beauty, calling Switzerland ‘the Valdez in Europe’

Once we arrive to the Matanuska Valley, we’ll leave our luggage at our lodge, and get out again to explore different locations in the area. At this time of the year, we may even find the first fall colors, something that would certainly bring us the most incredible photo opportunities. We will be visiting several different viewpoints from where we’ll capture great images of the wonderful sceneries in the valley.

After photographing sunset from one of this spots, we’ll get back to our lodge to rest.

viaje fotografico Alaska

DAY 11

We will leave our lodge early, to photograph another of the scenic viewpoints over the Matanuska Valley, this time for sunrise. The first rays of sunlight will illuminate the valley so beautifully, bringing the golden tones over the scene.

After breakfast, we will begin our way to one of the most mythical destinations in Alaska, Denali National Park. The route will be long, but we’ll be doing several stops along it. Some of these stops include Talkeetna, one of the most picturesque villages in Alaska, as well as a couple of different viewpoints of the Denali Range. From them, if lucky, we will manage to photograph the spectacular Denali peak from the distance.

We’ll be also looking for wildlife around the road, since moose sightings are quite common in the area. Once we arrive to the Denali area, we’ll head directly to some of the photo locations we have planned for sunset. At this time of the year, we might be able to capture the first red colors from the autumn.

Finally, we’ll get to our accommodation to rest.

DAY 12

Today we’ll be waking up very early, in order to get inside Denali National Park, in one of the official buses of the park. Please notice that, due to the Denali National Park normative, our photo instructor/s won’t be able to get inside the park with you during this excursion. However, we will be giving you plenty of tips and instructions before the excursion, so you know which places to stop by, as well as tips for photographing the wildlife that you probably will find during the excursion.

Some of the most remarkable locations you’ll be able to photograph during this visit are the Polychrome Pass or Wonder Lake, where you could capture the Denali Mountain reflections on non windy days.

After the visit, we’ll meet up again at the parking lot, from where we’ll take you to a different location for sunset.

DAY 13

As usual, we will get up early to photograph sunrise from a different area around Denali National Park. This time, we’ll be visiting a lake close to our accommodation. From here, apart from the spectacular landscape around us, we’ll try to look for wildlife, specially moose, which are very common here.

Afterwards, we’ll be able to live one of the most incredible adventures on this Alaska Photo Tour. We’ll have a full day excursion through Denali Highway, one of the most incredible areas in Alaska. We will be hiring a local company for that, which will take us into the wild, being able to capture some of the most authentic sceneries in Alaska, as well as the wonderful wildlife of the Last Frontier.

We’ll spend the whole day taking pictures, before getting back to our accommodation.

DAY 14

This will be the last day of the trip. After photographing our last sunrise, we’ll drive back to Anchorage Ted Stevens Airport. Once at the airport, our trip will have come to its end.

General Considerations

This Alaska Photo Tour is organized by the Official Travel Agency ‘Viajes Fotográficos – Dream Photo Expeditions’ ( hereinafter referred to as ‘the travel agency’).

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we offer, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itinerary shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photo guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

Documentation

Each traveler is responsible of having all the documentation needed for the trip, as well as for entering the destination/s. To visit Alaska, you need a valid Passport and might need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the country, depending on your country of residence.

Always check the requirements with your country authorities before traveling to a foreign destination.

The photographers and the travel agency have no responsibility about each traveler’s documentation, or about the requirements to be allowed to enter in Alaska or any other country.

Travel Insurance

This Alaska Photo Tour includes a basic assistance insurance. However, we strongly recommend you to bring a full travel insurance, which has unlimited or high limit money coverages in case of accident or disease.

Personal Counseling

The travel agency will give personal counseling and advice to travelers when purchasing their trip. Customers will receive a list with everything that they might need for the route, tips about how to prepare a medical kit for the travel, recommendations about the photography gear for the place, etc… At the same time, our staff will be happy to help and solve any doubt that the clients could have while they are preparing their trip.

Responsability

We are completely sure that this Alaska Photo Tour will be an unforgettable experience for travelers, as well as an intensive learning process. The travel agency will always try to promote values such as respect (cultural, social and environmental). Those values will always prevail in all our trips. At the same time, ‘Dream Photo Expeditions’ will always ensure that the impact of their trips is never negative for the country, their citizens or their wildlife.

The travel agency, tour leaders, guides, or the photographers hosting the trip, will have no responsibility at all for any accident, loss, theft or damage suffered by the customers participating on it.

Each customer declares that he or she accepts all the conditions on this trip at the time he or she is doing a reservation request and/or payment for it.

Payment

At the moment of booking, the client will be required to send an initial payment of US$600 (US$863 if choosing single room). Payments can be done by bank transfer, by credit or debit card, and by PayPal. However, please notice that credit or debit card and PayPal payments are subject to a supplement fee, to cover the costs of these payment methods.

The remaining balance will be due 60 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

Cancelations

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

However if the client doesn’t show or cancels the trip, the following cancellation policies will be applied:

– Less than 60 days prior to the trip: US$600 (US$863 in case they had chosen single room basis).
– Greater than 60 days prior to the trip: 100% of the trip cost.

Prices are based in the Exchange rates by October, the 20th, 2020. The currency may be updated until 21 days prior to the departure, according to Spanish Travel Laws, applying a supplement/discount in case of change.

Once the reservation is done by the client, and the services and their prices are confirmed by us, these prices only could be revised until 20 calendar days prior to the departure dates, only in case there are variations in the transportation costs (including the fuel prices), in accommodations, in rates and taxes referring to certain services (such as landing, boarding in ports and airports), or in monetary exchange rates applied to the trip.

RECOMMENDED PHOTO GEAR

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

Camera

DSLR or MIRRORLESS CAMERA RECOMMENDED

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the wild sceneries and landscapes in Alaska. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for a possible Northern Lights photo session.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 70-200MM

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm will be very useful in an Alaska photo tour. Apart from allowing to capture distant landscape images, it will be perfect for possible wildlife near the roads.

LONG TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 500 OR 600mm f/4

Long telephoto lens, such as a 400mm f/2’8, or a 500 or 600mm f/4, would be perfect for this photo tour, allowing to get spectacular wildlife images. A good alternative would be a zoom lens like a 150-600mm.

TRIPOD

A STURDY TRIPOD

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

ND, GRADUATED AND POLARIZER FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

REMOTE CONTROLLER OR INTERVALOMETER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

BATTERIES

Enough spare batteries

Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Specially when photographing wildlife, we might capture hundreds of images per day. Therefore, you’ll need enough batteries to avoid running out of energies.

MEMORY CARDS

ENOUGH MEMORY CARDS

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.

Therefore, we’ll have to be dressed consequently. We recommend you to dress in layers, so you can add or remove layers depending on the temperature. At the same time, you will need a synthetic or down jacket for the nights, to protect from the cold. Furthermore, a Gore Tex jacket or similar could be also useful, in case of rain. Mountain boots and/or hiking shoes would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this Alaska Photo Tour.

Are meals included on this trip?

No, meals are not included in the trip

This Alaska Photo Tour, as most of our photo tours, doesn’t include meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). This will allow us for maximum flexibility during the trip, in order to focus in the most important thing: photography. Normally, we will be having breakfast in the hotel or in cafes near the area, before or after our sunrise shooting session. For lunch, sometimes we’ll be stopping at restaurants, but other times we’ll be buying food at supermarkets (fruit, snacks, sandwiches, etc…), and doing a picnic or even eating in the vehicle/s. Then, we will have dinner at the hotel or in town, with more time to relax and enjoy the food.

Anyway, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the great Alaskan cuisines. Both meat and fish are incredible in Alaska! From all kind of fish and seafood, to the most delicious meat options, you’ll love the meal options in ‘The Last Frontier’.
