ICELAND PHOTO TOUR DETAILS

Our Winter Iceland Photo Tour, from November 12 to 20, 2023, and from February 3 to 11, 2024 (more dates available soon), is one of our most successful photo tours. Joining us on these dates, will give you the chance to photograph the island in one of the best times of the year for it. In this period, incredibly beautiful landscapes, and great chances to photograph the Northern Lights.

This Iceland Photo Tour is a once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph the nature and landscapes of one the most spectacular countries in the world. Unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, black sand beaches, icebergs dotted along distant shorelines and gorgeous waterfalls await to be captured by any landscape photography lover.

This photo tour is organized by our own official travel agency for photography lovers, and guided by our professional photographer/s. We are offering a great experience, planned to enjoy nature and landscape photography at its best. Our journey will take us throughout the country while we chase the most beautiful moments of light: dawn, dusk and golden hours. Nighttime photography will also be on our agenda, as we’ll try to capture the magical Aurora Borealis. This is a wonderful phenomenon that we will be searching for throughout our stay. Sadly, we can never know when the Northern Lights will actually be present. However, we have planned this tour during one of the periods with best chances to experience it.

What to photograph during this Iceland Photo Tour?

This Iceland Photo Tour will be focused on landscape photography, as this is one of the most stunning destinations on Earth. Some of the locations we’ll be photographing are amazing waterfalls, such as Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss o Gullfoss. We’ll also capture black sand beaches, like Reynisfjara, Stokksnes, or Diamond Beach. Then, glacier lagoons from the Vatnajökull Glacier (the largest one in Europe), such as Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon, or spectacular mountains and rock formations, as the Kirkjufell, Lomagnupur or Vestrahorn. We will also capture beautiful rivers, creeks, canyons, and panoramic views. Everywhere you go in Iceland, there is something amazing to photograph.

By other hand, we are also going to visit some of the nicest villages around the island, such as Grundarfjördur, Vik or Höfn. In some of those villages, we will be able to photograph their beautiful churches. Among them, we could highlight the ones in Budhir, Ingjaldsholl, Vik or Hof.

During these 9 days, we’ll travel around the South and West part of Iceland, photographing its most incredible locations. Every single day, we’ll pay special attention to the best moments of light, sunrise, sunset or golden hours. We have planned our route so we can visit those top locations at those special moments.

However, there is something more that we will try to capture during the trip: the magical Northern Lights. This will be one of the main purposes of the trip and, for many, the main reason to get to Iceland. Therefore, we will try our best to get the chance to photograph them. Every single day, we’ll be studying the solar activity and weather forecasts, and we’ll go out at night always that we have chances to see them. Anyway, this is one of the best times of the year to enjoy this extraordinary natural phenomenon

Why doing this IcelandPhoto Tour during this time of the year?

Visiting Iceland in November (as well as in February or March), will bring us fabulous winter or pre-winter conditions. Then, we’ll have many chances to find snow and ice on the locations. As a consequence of this, the sceneries will look even more beautiful than usual.

At the same time, this is one of the best times of the year to photograph the amazing Northern Lights. Therefore, there are many chances that we get to photograph the amazing Auroras during this trip. By other hand, wintry conditions are usually not the worst at this time. Traveling in months like December or January would imply more possibilities of harsh conditions and road closures.

Who is this Iceland Photo Tour for?

Our photo tour is suited for all ages, physical conditions and experience levels. Most locations are easily accessible, so there is no need for special conditions to join.

Equally, there is no age limit, anyone can join the trip as long as he or she is reasonably well.

At the same time, no minimum photo experience is required. Our photography guides will be on hand to assist and answer any photography questions you might have, so that you can achieve the best images possible

Summary

We offer a 9 day long Iceland Photo Tour, in which we’ll be able to photograph the most magical locations around the country, as we share special moments, and make new friends with the same hobbies. Undoubtedly, this is a great chance to visit one of the most photogenic countries in the world, with a well experienced travel agency and profesional photographer – guides. ITINERARY
DAY 1

Our journey begins with our group meeting at Keflavik airport. From here, we will head to Grundarfjördur, a quaint town in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and our destination for the following two nights. The drive to there will be two or three hours long, with fantastic views from the road. Then, we will have several opportunities to stop and take photos along the way. Once we get to the village, we’ll be just a five minutes drive from one of the most famous mountains in Iceland, Kirkjufell

Once we get to our accommodations, we’ll be photographing the sunset from the Kirkjufell area. After this, we’ll be prepared to shoot that evening, in case we are lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. In that case, we’ll be shooting the mountain from the amazing falls located at the other side of the road, the Kirkjufellfoss.

DAY 2

We will spend the whole day in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, visiting some of the most beautiful locations in the area.

First of all, we’ll get to Budhir for sunrise. Outside this really tiny village, there is a precious black church, probably the most famous all around Iceland. This location will be a perfect spot for our sunrise session, surrounded by the sea and the mountains. We’ll be hoping for beautiful tones in the sky, as well as for the golden light once the sun has appeared.

Later, and also South of the peninsula, lies the Londrangar coastline, where we will spend some time photographing the striking cliffs, with pinnacles that reach up to 75 meters high. This area will be an ideal setting to photograph seascapes, and practice using neutral density filters, in order to get different visual effects depending on exposure time.

In the middle of all this rugged natural area, we’ll find a few beautiful villages by the sea. Firstly, we’ll stop by Hellnar for some quick shots, before moving to our sunset location.

Then, we’ll make our way to Arnarstapi for sunset. This is one of the most beautiful villages on this peninsula, from which we will be able to photograph impressive sceneries and seascapes, together with the famous rock formation known as Gaklettur. The coastline in the area is surrounded by stunning cliffs and rock formations, which make for beautiful views. We’ll stay here during the sunset, trying to capture all the beauty that this ara will bring us.

Once the night has arrived, we’ll get back to our accommodation for a well deserved rest. However, we will check the conditions and will be ready to go out if there are chances to photograph the Northern Lights.

DÍA 3

Again, we will wake up early to capture the sunrise in front of the Kirkjufell mountain. This time, we’ll get different light conditions, with the sun hitting from behind. We’ll stay some time exploring the area, photographing the falls and the lagoon, while we search for interesting rocks and possible ice formations. After our session, we will drive West to explore the North area of the peninsula. Here, we’ll find spectacular seascapes and black sand beaches, together with beautiful mountains and impressive fjords. Before leaving the area we will photograph the amazing Ingjaldsholl church.

After this, we will travel east by the Southern Coast. During this long ride, we will be stopping several times to photograph some of the stunning sceneries around us. In addition, we’ll be looking for the precious Icelandic horses, doing some stops to photograph them.

By early evening, we will get to our sunset location, the impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This waterfall is located in front of a cavern and, depending on the weather and on how safe the path is, we might be able to hike and photograph it from behind. Certainly, this is one of the most stunning locations in Iceland, and we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it. Besides this one, there are several other falls in the surroundings, and we will try to visit several of them.

After sunset, we’ll drive to our accommodation, by the Skogafoss waterfall. This will be a great location to shoot the Northern Lights, in case we are lucky.

DAY 4

Today, we’ll wake up early to photograph the Skogafoss waterfall by sunrise. This is probably the most famous and most photographed waterfall in Iceland, and we’ll stay time enough to enjoy the location. Furthermore, it’s the perfect place to get our own Icelandic portrait, with the waterfall in the background.

After sunrise, we will hike to the nearby Kvernufoss waterfall, in the surroundings. This is a much less crowded location, so we will enjoy from countless photo possibilities, both during our hike and at the waterfall itself. Like in Seljalandfoss, we may also be able to get inside a cave under the cliff ,allowing us to photograph the falls from behind, giving us a unique vantage point for photos.

Next, we will be heading to the Dyrholaey cliffs area, an spectacular setting from which we’ll have extraordinary views of the landscapes around us. Then, we will stop at the very famous Reynisfjara black sand beach, from which we’ll also photograph the Reynisdrangar rock formations. The beach is famous for its incredible basalt columns, which make for moody landscape images.

Later, we will stop at Vik, where we will photograph its beautiful church, before continue driving East. Upon arrival in Höfn, our destination for the next two nights, we will head to the Stokksnes Peninsula for sunset. Here, we will capture the sunset with the backdrop of Vestrahörn mountain, in a magical setting, where the ocean meets gorgeous black sand dunes. If we have chances to see the Northern Lights, we’ll stay in the area, since it’s one of the most beautiful location to shoot it. Otherwise, we’ll get to our accommodation to sleep.

viaje fotografico Islandia

DAY 5

We’ll spend the whole day photographing Höfn and its surroundings. We’ll visit Stokksness again, this time for sunrise. This is one of the most photogenic areas in Iceland, with countless possibilities for photography. We’ll spend plenty of time exploring the black sand dunes, and looking for reflections of the Vestrahörn.

Later, we’ll be able to photograph one of the areas where ‘Game of Thrones’ was filmed, including a tiny village nestled into the mountains.

Our journey continues driving West where we’ll enjoy some extraordinary views of the mountains and glaciers to the North. During the drive, there are often reflections in ponds beside the roads, that make for wonderful photo opportunities. We may also find some wild Icelandic horses in this area which make for incredible subjects as they gallop freely across the mountainous landscapes.

As evening approaches, we will head back to Stokksness for sunset, where where we will be photographing the beach and the reflections of the mountains on its shoreline. Alternatively, and time dependind, we could drive East to Eystrahörn, another spectacular mountain range with great photography possibilities.

Again, we will be ready to capture the Northern Lights if they decide to make an apperance, from this area next to the sea.

viaje fotografico Islandia

DAY 6

Today, we’ll capture sunrise again near Stokksnes, before driving West to Vatnajökul National Park, our home for the next two days.

We’ll spend most part of the day visiting some of the beautiful glacier lagoons in the area. First of all, we will visit Fjallsarlon, an spectacular glacier lagoon, full of icebergs, and with incredible views of the glacier and the mountains that surround it. We’ll also photograph another nearby lagoon, known as Kvíárjökul. This place is normally not so crowded, and the scenery around it is simply fabulous. Given this, we’ll hike a bit in the area, in order to capture the beauty of the area.

After these visits, we will visit the lovely turf church at Hof. This little church, as well as its old cemetery, have extraordinary photo possibilities, with dune-shaped graves built over the ground.

Finally, we’ll drive to Yökulsarlon Glacier, another of the top locations for photography in Iceland. Here,we will photograph some glaciers as well as the world famous Diamond Beach, a black sand beach full of icebergs, which get to the sea from the nearby glacier lagoon, and then are moved to the shoreline by the waves, making it truly a remarkable sight.

Diamond beach is one of the most stunning places for anyone who visits Iceland for the first time. When you see these icebergs, some small, while others bigger than a horse, you can’t help but be amazed by such an incredible place. We will play with different exposure times when photographing the icebergs, something that will allow us to get unique effects from the wave movements.

After getting back to our accommodation, we will check the conditions and go out again, if there are possibilities to photograph the Aurora Borealis.

viaje fotografico Islandia

DAY 7

We will go to Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon for sunrise. From here, we’ll photograph the icebergs on the water, with the beautiful mountainous background. You often get some beautiful soft tones in the sky from here, perfect for adding a wintry mood to our pictures.

As an option, we might hire an ice cave excursion (not included in the price), to photograph the stunning blue colors inside the caves. We work with the best local companies and guides, so we could prepare a private group for visiting one of the most impressive ice caves in the area.

Afterwards, we will drive West to the Skfatafell area, where we’ll be able to photograph other different glacier lagoons. All these lagoons are truly amazing, and each one of them offers different fantastic photo possibilities. For this reason, we’ll try to make our best from these visits.

Later, we will drive back East. We’ll go back to Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon for sunset. Once again, we’ll enjoy from the endless possibilities that this place bring us. All this area around Vatnajökull Nationa Park will be one of the highlights of our trip. Because of that, we will visit during different stages of the day, to capture it in all it’s glory.

In the evening, we will be on the lookout  for the Northern Lights, trying to photograph them in front of one of the glacier lagoons in the area.

DÍA 8

For our last sunrise in the Yöjulsarlon Glacier area, we will go back to Diamond Beach. Same as during our previous visit, we will be practicing long exposure photography here. We will be searching for beautiful icebergs, and playing with the shutter speed to get motion in our images. We will be using neutral density filters to get the best results.

Afterwards, we will begin our drive back to West. Along the way, we will stop several times to photograph other impressive locations on the island, such as the stunning Lomagnupur mountain, where we will be able to photograph it’s massive peak reflected in some ponds close to the road.

Depending on time, we may also be visiting the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, another top location for photography, with its wonderful cliffs and impossible shapes.

For sunset, and depending on time, we will be visiting the Bruarfoss waterfall, which is famous for it’s blue tones. This is one of the smallest waterfalls we’ll see during our trip, but at the same one of the most beautiful. There is a half an hour hike to get to the falls, so this visit will depend on time, and on the participants’ energy by this time of the trip. Alternatively, if it’s not possible to get there on time and safely, we will visit another location, such as Gulfoss waterfall.

Once the night has come, we’ll drive to our accommodation. However, this will be our last night of the trip, so we’ll keep an eye on the sky, trying to photograph our last Northern Lights session.

viaje fotografico Islandia

DÍA 9

Today, we’ll be driving to Keflavik International Airport where unfortunately our journey in this amazing country will come to an end.

However, depending on our flights schedules, we might do some last visits before our drive. In that case, we would photograph Gulfoss waterfall at sunrise, one of the most famous falls in the Southern Coast. In contrast to Bruarfoss, this is a huge waterfall in the middle of an incredibly vast area, where we’ll be able to admire the amazing force of Nature.

At the same time, if we still had time, we would visit the nearby Geysir area, visiting the famous Geysir and Strokkur, where we will have the chance to photograph an erupting geyser.

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we are offering, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itineraries shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photograper guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, as well as the photographer/s guide/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

The remaining balance will be due 60 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

Cancelations

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

RECOMMENDED PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

Camera

DSLR or MIRRORLESS CAMERA RECOMMENDED

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the stunning Icelandic landscapes. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the night photography sessions.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be probably the most important lens for a trip like this. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

TELEPHOTO LENS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 70-200MM

If you already own a lens like a 70-200mm, and you don’t care about the weight or the space, you can bring it to the trip. It might be useful to capture mountain views and portraits in the sceneries from the distance.

FAST LENS FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS

FOR EXAMPLE, A 14MM 1'8 OR A 20MM 1'4

A lens like a 14mm 1’8 or a 20mm 1’4 would be perfect for photographing the Northern Lights, since the faster aperture would allow to use lower ISO or shorter shutter speeds.

TRIPOD

A STURDY TRIPOD

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, since Iceland is usually very windy!

PHOTOGRAPHY FILTERS

ND, GRADUATED AND POLARIZER FILTERS

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

REMOTE CONTROLLER

REMOTE CONTROLLER OR INTERVALOMETER

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

‘I have joined two of Sergio Lanza’s photo tours, Ladakh in 2019, and Iceland in 2020, and both of them have been very different but so emotional anyway. I love Sergio’s passion when leading this trips, as well as everything I have learnt in them. So happy to keep discovering new destinations with Dream Photo Expeditions!!’

‘I love photography, but I must confess I am not a professional. However, I decided to join an Iceland Photo Tour, with a borrowed camera, so I could learn from the true professionals. Undoubtedly, I really loved the experience, and I will repeat for sure! Icelandic landscapes are otherworldly and Sergio, our photo guide, knows perfectly all the most photogenic routes and locations. It was like postcard views anytime! Each spot was even more beautiful than the previous ones, which already were amazing… The best part was having been able to see and photograph the Northern Lights, even together with the Milky Way, that was simply wonderful for me!

Sergio’s personalized attention was incredible, as well as being part of a small group, since you get to feel a being with a group of friends. I must say that our photo tour took place at the same time that the Covid-19 pandemic exploded, but we were able to complete the trip and get back home just in time! Anyway, I will always remember this Iceland Photo Tour as one of the most spectacular trips of my life!’

‘A team of excellent professionals who are constantly attending your needs, and trying to bring you the best possible experiences, as well as an even better human group, with a great mixture of cultures among all the participants. Then, fascinating locations, perfect for both professional and (as my case!) amateur photography lovers, who are trying to learn something, thanks to the guides’ infinite patience and will to teach us how to capture all the beauty that we have in front of our eyes.

Certainly, many incredible places to visit and photograph, surrounded by the best possible people and with the best help. It’s been a great pleasure to meet them, and I just hope to repeat the experience in more of their destinations.’

‘Totally recommended traveling with these great professionals and human beings. If you like photography, you are going to love it, I have been lucky to stay a whole week with these great photographers, who helped me all the time, always doing their best for all the participants, as well as very close people to treat with.

I would like to add that Sergio has always helped me, from the first time I request info about the trip, until the last time, and I am sure I will repeat with them. Thanks a lot for everything.’
