Official Travel Agency in Europe
One of our most awaited bets for 2021 is our Kamchatka Photo Tour, from August the 21st to September the 4th, 2021. The Kamchatka Peninsula, in Russia, is one of the wildest areas on Earth. Home to some of the most impressive wildlife, as the grizzly bear, and featuring incomparable natural sceneries, we are talking about a must visit destination for any photography lover.
Kamchatka, located in the Southeast of Russia, is world famous for its spectacular landscapes, specially for its incredible volcanos. Also known as the “Russian Alaska”, Kamchatka is remarkable for being a mostly wild area. Therefore, to make the most from this photo tour, we’ll stay in tents for most part of the trip, being able to be next to the best locations, at the right times. Imagine waking up by a beautiful pond, with extraordinary reflections of the stunning volcanos in the surroundings. That’s the kind of experiences we are going to live during this trip.
At the same time, we’ll have the great advantage of being at a not so crowded area, which will help us enjoying the best possible experience. All this, taking incredible pictures of Kamchatka, while you improve your photography. You’ll count with the help of our two photography guides, Dan Zafra and Sergio Lanza, as well as with the services of our experienced local agency. Apart from it, all will be organized by our own travel agency specialized in photography.
This Kamchatka photo tour is mostly focused on landscape photography, given the otherworldly landscapes we’ll find in Kamchatka. Besides the amazing sceneries, Kamchatka is also a great wildlife destination, so we will be also doing some wildlife photography during the trip.
Regarding its landscapes, Kamchatka is home to some of the most spectacular sceneries around the whole planet. Among the locations we’ll photograph, we can highlight its impressive volcanos, fabulous glaciers, precious ice caves, fabulous lakes and ponds… all of them bringing us endless photo opportunities! We’ll be visiting two regions during our trip; first, we will get to the ‘Giants Valley’, in the Klyuchevskoya National Park, where we’ll be able to photograph stunning volcanos. Then, we’ll head to the South of Kamchatka, also home to the spectacular Gorely and Mutnovsky volcanos, where we’ll also capture amazing glaciers, ice caves and fumaroles. Both areas will bring us constant chances for getting great images.
Although we’ll spend most part of the day taking pictures, we’ll specially focus on the best moments of light, sunrise and sunset. This way, we will be rewarded with wonderful colors for our photography sessions. However, as already stated, Kamchatka is a really wild region, and the most beautiful locations are so far away, that we’d have to drive for hours to get there. Therefore, we will stay in tents, the only way of photographing the best spots at those special moments.
Then, as we mentioned, we’ll probably have many chances to photograph the wildlife in Kamchatka. Among the species we may find during the trip, we should remark the red and arctic fox, the reindeer, the otter, or even the wolf and the brown bear. Every single day, we’ll make sure to be ready to photograph any of these animals, in case we spot them!
According to our opinion, late summer/early fall is the best time of the year to photograph Kamchatka. During this period, the sceneries will look at their best. The tundra will turn that amazing reddish color, which will offer us a perfect frame for our photographs. Everything in Kamchatka will look particularly beautiful during this time, the main reason why we host this photo tour during these dates.
Besides this, late summer and early fall are also specially great moments for wildlife photography. Most species will be specially active at this time of the year, so we may have more chances to photograph the Kamchatka wildlife during these dates.
This Kamchatka workshop can be considered an easy level trip, being suitable for any photography enthusiastic.
As we have described in the previous sections, we will be often next to the action, by some of the most stunning locations, staying in tents for most part of the trip. This way we can guarantee that the trip will be as easy as possible, not needing long or hard hikes to get to the photo locations most of the times. Given this, there is no minimum physical level required to join us on this trip. However, we will be doing a couple of longer hikes during the trip, but if someone feels it’s too hard for them, we would offer a second option for part of the group.
At the same time, there is no age limit to participate. Anyone is welcome to join us, as long as they are reasonably healthy.
On the other hand, this photo tour is suitable for all photo levels, and no previous photographic experience is required. Whether you are an amateur, and advanced user, or even a professional photographer, you will be welcome to join this trip. Our photo instructors will bring personalized attention, adjusted to every participant’s need, which will help you getting the best possible pictures, while you improve your photography.
Finally, there is no minimum photo gear required to participate, you can join us even shooting with your smartphone or a compact camera! Although we include a ‘Recommended Gear’ section below, it’s simply a list of the best possible gear for the workshop. Regardless the camera you use for the trip, be sure you’ll get back home with extraordinary photos.
This is a really special trip for those photography lovers who dream with the wildest places and the most remote landscape. A truly photographic adventure that will take you through some of the prettiest sceneries on Earth. We have prepared a very complete photo tour, in which you’ll have countless photo opportunities every day.
Kamchatka is kind of a paradise for any Nature lover, and this trip will be the perfect chance to capture all its beauty. Now you can be one of the 12 fortunate participants enjoying this special region. Do not wait anymore and join us on this adventure!
On this first day of the trip, we’ll meet up at the Petropávlovsk Airport, in Kamchatka, Russia. After the presentations, we will be heading to our accommodation, where we’ll have a first talk about the trip. Afterwards, we’ll have dinner and rest, to prepare for the adventure that is awaiting.
We will wake up early to begin our way North, towards the first area we will photograph during the trip, Klyuchevskoi National Park. The route will be long, since the roads in Kamchatka are mostly gravel and rudimentary ones.
We’ll get to Kozyrevsk in the afternoon, next to the entrance of the park. From here, our destination for the night, we will already be able to spot and photograph the volcanos in the distance.
Today, we’ll leave our accommodation early, entering Klyuchevskoi National Park, heading to the area South of the Tolbachik volcano, our first destination inside the park.
Once we get to the area, our team will prepare the camp, before heading to a nearby volcanic cone, with spectacular panoramic views of the surroundings. Around us, we’ll be able to capture several volcanos and craters, which will make for a perfect location for sunset. We’ll stay at the location till the light is gone, being able to get dozens of spectacular images of this otherworldly scene.
After this, we will get back to the camp for dinner and a well deserved sleep.
We will be waking up early to visit another volcanic cone for sunrise, photographing the volcanos in the background from a different perspective. If lucky, we might be able to photograph a sea of clouds, fairly common in the area.
After sunrise, we will visit a different area, but full of photo possibilities too, the ‘Death Forest’. This forest was totally covered by volcanic ashes after the Tobalchik volcano eruption in 1975. Although all the area was devastated, the rests of some of the strongest trees still remain standing. This scenery will bring us unique photo opportunities, in a totally surreal area.
For sunset, we will visit some lava fields created by the volcano’s last eruption, in 2012. At some of the spots in the area, we will still able to feel the heat and see the fire caused by the eruption, a totally unbelievable experience. Again, this location will offer us incomparable possibilities to get wonderful pictures. We will be trying many different compositions, thanks to the incredible patterns formed by the lava. Undoubtedly, we’ll get fabulous images from this session.
Once the night has arrived, we will get back to our camp.
This will be our last full day in the region, so we will get back to some of the locations we liked the most during our stay, specially if we didn’t get good conditions on them. At the same time, we will visit other different spots, also with fabulous possibilities, with extraordinary views of the surroundings.
It will be a very complete photography day, in which we’ll get hundreds of nice pictures. We’ll get back to our camp after photographing sunset in some of the lovely locations in the park.
Today, we’ll dismantle our camp, before heading back to Kozyrevsk, just outside the limits of the park. Once we arrive to the village, we will have some time to rest, relax and recover after these very intense first days of the trip, full of photo activity.
We’ll stay at the same accommodation where we stayed some days before.
We will leave up the town early in the morning, heading to a different part inside Klyuchevskoy National Park, this time North to Tolbachik volcano. Although we will have the same volcano in the background, the landscapes around us will be totally different from the locations we visited the previous days. As the eruptions of the volcano didn’t affect this area, everything here will be full of life.
Here, we will have chances to spot the wildlife that lives in the area, such as the fox, the partridge or, if lucky, even the impressive brown bear.
We’ll prepare our camp in a location with mesmerizing views, surrounded by the spectacular volcanos in the region. Among these, apart from the North face of the Tolbachik, we can highlight the huge Kamen and the Klyuchevskoy volcanos. The last one is the volcano from which the park takes its name, the highest volcano in Eurasia. All these volcanos will bring us fabulous photo possibilities.
For sunset, we’ll head to a nearby lake, from which we’ll have lovely views of the sceneries around us. If lucky, we could even enjoy the precious reflections of the volcanos on the water.
For sunrise, we’ll get back to the lake we photographed the previous evening. This time, we’ll be capturing the first rays of sunlight, as they illuminate the scene. At this time of the day, sometimes we may find mirror reflections on the lake, due to the absence of wind. In that case, we would get incredible reflections of the volcanos on the water.
After our session, we will go for an easy hike along the valley. This will be a very easy activity, suitable for all conditions. Optionally, depending on the energies, we could do a longer trekking, to get to a nearby lava canyon, certainly a marvelous spot.
For sunset, we will get back to the lake again, searching for different spots by its shoreline. At the same time, the weather may be very changing in Kamchatka, so it’s quite possible that we get different conditions. Therefore, every single session may be totally different from the previous one, allowing for a great variety of images.
After photographing our lake by sunrise, we will dismantle our camp, to continue our trip throughout the beautiful Kamchatka.
The route to our following destination, the area near the Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanos, in Southern Kamchatka, will be quite long. Therefore, we will have to stay one night in Yelizovo, half the way to our destination. Anyway, we’ll be doing plenty of stops along our way, to take pictures of the surroundings.
Today, we’ll continue heading South, doing some stops to photograph several locations around our way. Among these, we could highlight a mesmerizing mountain pass, from where we’ll capture the impressive panoramic views of the area. From this location, we’ll be able to photograph the Vilyiuchik volcano, surrounded by vegetation.
We’ll arrive to our destination by the afternoon, when we’ll begin exploring the area, searching for the spectacular ice caves that usually can be found in the surroundings. If conditions allow, we could be taking pictures from some of these magical ice caves. However, we have to consider that ice caves are very changing, and can be very dangerous, and even collapse, specially during the warm season. Therefore, we will only visit some of these caves if it’s totally safe to do it.
We’ll pass almost the whole day focusing on the stunning Mutnovsky volcano. As one of the highlights of this Kamchatka photo tour, we will hike to its crater, passing through amazing spots, such as sulphur colored mountains, extraordinary fumaroles, or boiling hot pools. This route will allow for endless photo possibilities!
During the way back to our camp, we will visit the Opazny waterfall, at the foot of the volcano, next to an impressive cliff.
Today we’ll explore another volcano in the area, the Gorely, one of the most active volcanos we will visit during the trip.
The Gorely has around 13 craters, constantly changing due to the volcanic activity. In some of these craters, blue and turquoise lake have formed because of the rain, offering extraordinary photo possibilities. We will be exploring some of these lakes, where we’ll capture fantastic photographs. From some of these lakes, we will be also able to capture the spectacular valley around us, even with the stunning Vilyuchik in the background.
During this last full day in Kamchatka, we’ll get back to some of the locations we visited during these last days, around the Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanos, searching for different light conditions.
In the afternoon, we will dismantle our camp, and head back to the area around Petropavlovsk, the main town in Kamchatka. We’ll pass the last night of the trip there.
Today we’ll be taken back to the airport, for the end of the Kamchatka photo tour. Make sure you have booked your flights for September the 4th, 2021.
El viaje finalizará con el traslado al aeropuerto, así que cerciórate de tener tu vuelo de vuelta para el día 5 de septiembre de 2020.

Petropavlovsk Airport, Kamchatka, Russia (Google Maps)
We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.
A wide angle lens will be really useful to photograph the spectacular landscapes in Kamchatka. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for some possible night photography sessions.
An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.
A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm will be very useful in this Kamchatka photo tour. It will allow us to capture fantastic shots of the distant volcanos and sceneries, getting unique pictures.
If you have a long telephoto lens, such as a 400mm f/2’8, or a 500 or 600mm f/4, you could bring it for the trip, for the occasional wildlife. However, you’ll probably not be using it frequently, and it’s too heavy!
A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.
We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.
Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.
Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Given that we’ll be staying in camps most of the nights, charging batteries won’t be so easy. Therefore, you should bring enough spare units.
We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.
This Kamchatka Photo Tour is an easy trip, being recommended for anyone, no matter the age or the physical level. As long as you are able to walk for a short five minute hike, you are welcome to come with us. Most of the photo locations are located just a short walk from the places where we’ll park, meaning this will be an easy trip.
At the same time, there is no age limits for the tour, as well as your health and conditions are reasonably good.
There is no need of a minimal photography level to join this Kamchatka Photo Tour. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to come to this trip, nor even having a lot of experience with your camera. All our photo tours are open to all levels, even for beginners, or unexperienced photography users. Sometimes, we even have people just taking shots with their smartphones.
One of our highlights is providing customized attention, so we will help you to get the best possible images, regardless your previous level. We’ll be there to help you becoming a better photographer!
During this Kamchatka Photo Tour, we can expect mid to cold temperatures. Average temperatures during this period are around 47º to 61º Fahrenheit (8º to 16º Celsius). Some rain it’s also possible during the trip.
Given this, you need to be well prepared for the trip. We recommend dressing in layers, so you can add or remove layers depending on the temperature. You will need a synthetic or down jacket, for the colder moments, like sunrise and sunset. At the same time, a Gore Tex or waterproof jacket could be also useful, in case of rain. Mountain boots or hiking shoes would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this Kamchatka Photo Tour.
This Kamchatka Photo Tour includes all the meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner) during our days staying in tents. For those days, we’ll be bringing a cook in our local team, who will prepare all our meals. Sometimes, we could bring sandwiches or similar food during our visit, so we wouldn’t need to get back to our camp, but most of the times we’ll eat at the camp.
Then, all meals at the towns will not be included. We’ll have those meals at local restaurants, or at our accommodation.
Anyway, we’ll be able to taste the local Russian cuisine, specially its amazing fish and seafood… including the delicious caviar!
Currently, the main payment option we have is the bank transfer. However, if you prefer it, we also have other payment options, such as credit or debit card, PayPal or Transferwise. Please notice that these other payment options may apply a commission fee. You can ask us about these different payment options.
If you choose to pay by credit or debit card, or by PayPal, you can process your payment online, when you finish the booking process. For bank transfer payment, you just have to proceed with the booking and then, once you finish the process with the chosen payment method, you’ll receive an email with al the instructions and bank details.
For most part of this Kamchatka photo tour, we will be staying in tents, setting up our camps by the most amazing areas. That’s the only way to photograph the most incredible sceneries at sunrise or sunset, since there are no accommodations inside the National Parks or the wild areas we will be visiting. In fact, getting to those special spots will take us hours of driving through gravel roads.
Then, for those nights in the towns, we will stay at cabins or local hotels, where we will be able to rest and recover from the intense experiences we will be living in the wild.
Each traveller will be staying in a double tent, or a twin shared room, according to the itinerary, shared with another participant of the tour. If you come with another person to the trip, you can share the tent/room. However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll choose a mate for you among the other participants in the trip (always same genre). Anyway, you will also have the chance to choose a single tent/room for you, paying an extra supplement. Contact us for all details.
Anyone can join this Kamchatka Photo Tour, no matter their country of residence. Our main travel agency is settled in Santander, Spain, but our trips are open to customers from countries all around the world. Therefore, we may have clients from different places in our photo tours.
This Kamchatka Photo Tour will begin at Keflavik Petropavlosk Airport, in Kamchatka, Russia. Therefore, all the participants have to get there for the first day of the tour, traveling from their country of residence. There is no need to meet with the group before arriving to Kamchatka.
Once you have confirmed your booking for this Kamchatka Photo Tour, we will send you the trip info with a recommended gear PDF guide. This will include suggestions not only about the photography gear, but also about the clothes and accessories you might need during this photo tour. To sum up, you won’t have to worry about anything, since our expert photo leaders and guides will inform you about everything you will need, so you can enjoy your travel as much as possible!
As a first tip, we would suggest you bringing a light color down or shell jacket (for example red, orange, yellow, light green, etc…). That jacket will protect you from the cold and the rain but, at the same time, you’ll look great when photographed in some of the most beautiful locations around the wild Kamchatka!
