Visiting wild lands, as well as desert and mountain landscapes, and staying with nomads, will be part of the experience we have prepared for you. A fabulous opportunity for Nature and photography lovers,
Located between Central and East Asia, Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world. The country is surrounded by vast steppes and the Altai Mountains to the west, and the Gobi Desert to the South. All of them, places that we will be exploring during the two weeks that we will spend in Mongolia. Visiting this destination will allow us to enjoy the many possibilities of a still not too crowded country. An area that remains authentic and wild, offering us its full potential to explore and photograph it. Both its landscapes and its people, will brings us extraordinary photo opportunities.
This will be one of our most exclusive photo tours, as well as a really unforgettable experience. Our own travel agency, specialized in photography trips, will be dealing with all the organization. At the same time, you’ll be accompanied by our experienced photo guides. However, we will also have a local agency team guiding us during the whole trip. Given this, you’ll be able to enjoy the trip at its best, focusing only in taking the best possible pictures.
This will be a landscape and portrait photo tour. During the 15 days of the trip, we’ll have constant chances of getting wonderful images of both types of photography.
Mongolia is home to a great variety of landscapes, from the amazing Altai Range, to the incredible Gobi Desert. The Altai mountains will bring us extraordinary landscape opportunities, being able to capture wonderful images of its lakes, with the stunning peaks in the background. We’ll be discovering really spectacular sceneries, in a still quite wild area, something that will be totally worth it!
In contrast, the Gobi dessert, as well as the sceneries we will visit in our routes to and from it, will reward us with outstanding raw and desertic landscapes, extraordinary views for our photographic purposes. We will be able to capture the wonderful sand dunes in Gobi, but also incredible canyons, or unbelievable rock formations.
As always, we will pay special attention to sunrises and sunsets, searching for the most beautiful lights. This way, we’ll be visiting the most photogenic spots at those times, trying to get the most spectacular photos. Besides, in this Mongolia Photo Tour, we’ll be doing some night photography sessions, capturing some of those wonderful sceneries during the night.
Then, one of the highlights of a Mongolia photo tour is social photography. Every single day, we’ll have lots of great opportunities to photograph the locals. From the people in towns, to the marvelous nomads, we’ll manage to get dozens of lovely portrait pictures in our trip. In this way, to guarantee the best possible experience, we’ll be staying in nomads’ yurts during part of the trip. Thanks to that, we’ll be able to get the best possible portraits of them, while we enjoy unforgettable moments with them. A truly amazing venture!
Basically, we are hosting this Mongolia photo tour at August because all locations will be open at this time of the year. Mongolia’s weather during the cold months is one of the hardest around the world, and most roads are closed or difficult to access. Summer can be sometimes rainy, but it’s something that we’ll be able to deal with!
At the same time, for living the kind of experience we have organized, including staying at yurts, we need to travel there at a time when weather is not so bad.
Then, although it’s still summer, August is way less crowded than June or July, so it will add for the greatest experience!

However, for those who are ready, we’ll do a first photo visit, to photograph some of the landmarks in Ulan Bator and, specially, to capture some portraits of the locals. After this session, we’ll get back to the hotel to rest and prepare for this amazing adventure.
Today, we’ll fly to Ulgii in the morning, in the Bayan-Ulgii province, which will be the first region we’ll visit during the trip. Here, we will live incredible experiences, while we stay with the Mongol nomads at the foot of the Altai Mountains. During this part of the photo tour, we’ll be focusing in both mountain landscape and portrait photography.
After arriving to Ulgii, we will be taken to our accommodation, in an eagle hunters’ camp. From the very first moment in the area, we’ll begin to capture some portraits of the nomads, while we observe their daily routines. We’ll also check the conditions to shoot our first sunset in the surroundings, with the alternative of keeping photographing the nomads.
Then, we’ll have dinner with our hosts, before getting to our yurts to sleep.
Again, we’ll wake up early today, to photograph sunrise from one of the amazing sceneries in the surroundings. We’ll continue exploring the area, accompanied by some of the nomads, who will be dressing in their traditional costumes.
We’ll have amazing possibilities of photographing our hosts, the famous eagle hunters, getting extraordinary portraits of them with the wild sceneries around us in the background. They will bring their eagles, as they ride their horses, in the middle of spectacular locations. Undoubtedly, this will be one of the highlights of the trip.
After sunset, we’ll get back to the camp, being able to have dinner again with the nomads. After that, depending on the conditions, we might go out again for a night photography session.
This will be our last full day with the nomads, so we’ll get up early to make the most from it. We’ll start going out for sunrise, again accompanied by some of our local guides.
After sunrise, we’ll spend the day visiting different locations from those we visited the previous day. At the same time, we might get repeat some spots that we liked the most, trying to get different light conditions in them. Anyway, we’ll be photographing some of the most stunning places all around this Mongolian province.
In the evening, after dinner, we’ll check the conditions again, to get our for another night photo session.
Today we’ll be leaving the area, so we’ll be doing our last sunrise pictures in the surroundings, as well as getting our last portraits of the nomads. After this, we’ll begin our way to the Khurgan mountains, by the Chinese border.
Along our route, we’ll be enjoying the outstanding views around us, but the best chances will be awaiting for us in our destination. Once we get there, we’ll enjoy an incredible paradise, where we will be able to photograph pristine lakes such as the Khurgan or the Khoton ones. In them, we’ll often be able to capture fantastic reflections of the amazing mountains in the surroundings.
We’ll keep exploring these sceneries, as our guides prepare our camp. For sunset, we’ll be capturing the last rays of light from one of these lakes, staying there until the night comes. If conditions are good, we’ll be trying some night shoots too, by this incomparable location.
Then’ we’ll get back to our camp to sleep in our tents.
We’ll come back to the lake for sunrise, trying to capture the reflections of the stunning Khurgan mountains on the lake. Often, the water is calm by dawn, offering those wonderful mirror moments for photography lovers.
After sunrise, we’ll hike the area, exploring the many photo possibilities we’ll get around it. Depending on energies, we might opt for a longer hike, which would lead us to see some Bronze Age petroglyphs.
In the afternoon, we will explore other of the incredible lakes in the region, staying by its shoreline for sunset. Hopefully, we will get that beautiful golden light as the sun is setting, illuminating the mountains reflected on the lake. Mongolia weather is often very changeable, so light conditions might be totally different from previous sessions, allowing to get a great variety of pictures.
After sunset, we’ll get back to our camp for dinner and, if conditions are good, we’ll be shooting night pictures again.

Among these stops, we have to highlight Tsagaan Suvarga, also kowns as ‘The White Stupa’. This amazing 1,300 feet (400 meter) long cliff was created 10 million years ago, when the area was covered by the sea. Due to the erosion, these different rocky structures were formed, creating the amazing purple, white and yellowish colors.
After photographing this spectacular rocky formation, we’ll continue to our destination, a nomad camp where we’ll be staying for the next night. We’ll leave our luggage and head to our sunset location, the Yolyn Am Canyon, which receives its name from the bearded vulture. We will be exploring this spectacular gorge until the light is gone, enjoying the beautiful sunset light. If lucky, we might even be able to photograph the Siberian ibex.

Due to the winds, the san dunes are in continuous movement and change. In fact, they are also known as ‘singing dunes’, because the grains of sand rub against each other due to the winds, producing that particular sound.
We will set our camp in the area, where we’ll be staying for the next two days. After this, we will get to the sand dunes for sunset, capturing the amazing golden tones and textures that he sun often brings in the area, as it sets over the horizon.

After having dinner at our camp, we will check the possibility of doing a night photography session by the sand dunes.
Again, we will wake up to capture splendid pictures of the sand dunes by sunrise. The sand dunes at Gobi Desert have endless photo opportunities, so we’ll be constantly getting different fabulous shots.
After breakfast, we will begin our route to the Bayanzag area, a rocky cliff region with spectacular sceneries, and with abundant fossils. According to many studies, several dinosaur species lived in the area millions of years ago. Once we get there, we will be exploring its many photo possibilities, waiting for the sunset. If lucky, the cliffs will get amazing red tones as the sun is setting, and the light illuminates the rocks. Due to this phenomenon, the area is also referred to as ‘The Flaming Cliffs’.
After sunset, we’ll get to our camp for dinner. Before going to sleep, we will check the conditions for a possible night session.
Today, we will wake up early to photograph again the ‘flaming cliffs’ by sunrise. Again, we might be able to capture the fantastic red tones on the rocks, if the sky is open.
After breakfast, we’ll have to continue our route to Ulan Bator, where we’ll arrive by the afternoon. We will give you some free time for shopping in the city. Alternatively, we may do a last portrait session in one of the markets in Ulan Bator.

Ulan Bator International Airport, Ulan Bator, Mongolia (Google Maps)
We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.
A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the impressive desertic and mountain landscapes in Mongolia. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for our night photography sessions.
An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.
A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm would be very useful on this trip. It would help you to capture distant sceneries, like distant mountains, while it would bring amazing portrait photo possibilities.
Although non essential, if you already have a portrait specific lens, like a 35mm f/1’4, a 85mm f/1’4 or f/1’8, or a 135mm, do not hesitate and bring it to the trip. It would allow you to get the best quality portrait shots!
A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.
We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.
Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.
Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Take into account that we will be staying at very remote locations for most of the trip, so you should bring enough spare batteries.
We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.
This Mongolia Photo Tour is recommended for anyone, no matter their age or their physical level to join the trip. We will be doing some short hikes during our trip, but always will be easy and short ones. So, as long as you are ok with hiking for some minutes , you are welcome to come with us. Given all this, we can consider this is a quite easy to do trip.

You don’t need to be a professional photographer to come to this trip, nor even having a lot of experience with your camera. One of our highlights is providing customized attention, so we will help you to get the best possible images, regardless your previous level. We’ll be there to help you becoming a better photographer!
During this Mongolia Photo Tour, we can expect quite warm temperatures during the daytime, and colder ones during the nights. However, nothing specially complicated if we are well prepared. We may also get some rainy days during this month, something we’ll have to consider when preparing our luggage.
Taking into account the weather, we recommend you to dress in layers, so you can add or remove layers depending on the temperature. A light or medium jacket would be recommended for the nights and colder moments. At the same time, a Gore Tex jacket or similar would be also useful, in case of rain. Mountain boots or hiking shoes would be perfect for most of the time. Once you confirm your booking, you will also receive a guide withe the recommended gear list for this Mongolia Photo Tour.

We will be normally having breakfast at our camps or tents, before or after our sunrise shooting sessions. Then, we’ll have lunch also at the camps, or sometimes doing a picnic outside, for maximum flexibility. Finally, we’ll have dinner again at the camps or tents, after our sunset photographs.
However, meals at the towns are not included, so we’ll be having them at the hotels, or at local restaurants. Anyway, we will be able to try the local food, both the traditional nomadic one, as well as the modern cuisine in the towns.

Hotel rooms will always include a private bath.
If you come with another person to the trip, you’ll share the room, However, if you are traveling alone, we’ll choose a roommate for you between the other participants in the trip (always same genre).
