We are happy to offer you our Tromso Photo Tour, from March the 10th to the 17th, 2024, a great opportunity to capture the Northern Lights. Tromso is known as ‘The Capital of the Arctic’, so you can guess the kind of sceneries you are going to find here. Winter landscape at its best, in one of the most spectacular destinations in Europe, with a precious city surrounded of the wildest Arctic locations.

At the same time, Tromso is world famous for its great chances to see the Northern Lights. Given its high latitude location, we can surely say it’s one the best towns on Earth for it. Furthermore, once you leave the city, there are dozens of locations with no light pollution, ideal to shoot at night. This way, we are talking about one of the best options for Northern Lights photography.

This will be a 6 day long photo tour, incredibly intense, and plenty of photo opportunities. Both during the day and during the nights, we will be enjoying all the magical scenes in and around Tromso.

What to photograph during this Tromso Photo Tour?

This Tromso Photo Tour is totally focused on Northern Lights and winter landscape photography. Although most photo lovers visiting Tromso get there to chase the Northern Lights, the possibilities for landscape photography during the daytime are simply outstanding.

Tromso is so far North that chances to see the photograph during the winter are really high. Regardless the solar activity, if the sky is not overcast, we’ll be likely able to capture these beautiful lights. Therefore, staying in the area for 6 nights, we will have very high possibilities to photograph the Auroras Borealis. At the same time, there are countless wonderful locations ideal to capture the Northern Lights, so we will be trying luck from some of them during the trip.

We’ll do our best to help you capturing this magical Nature show, teaching you how to photograph the Northern Lights.

However, we’ll be also enjoying the fabulous possibilities for landscape photography during the trip. The impressive sceneries in and around Tromso will allow us to capture fabulous landscape pictures. Because of that, we’ll take you to the most amazing places in the area, visiting its most remarkable spots for photography.

The Arctic landscapes around Tromso will include spectacular views of fjords, seascapes, mountains, forests and frozen lakes. All of those wonderful sceneries will look precious, covered by a gorgeous winter blanket. Every day of the trip, we’ll visit a different area, looking for the best golden light in those amazing locations.

We’ll be paying special attention to the best moments of light each day, sunrise and sunset. Given this, we’ll make sure to stay at the top locations during those moments.

Why doing this Tromso Photo Tour during this time of the year?

We are hosting this Tromso Photo Tour at this time of the year based only on photography purposes. Firstly, this is one of the best moments in the year for seeing the Northern Lights. Besides this, there will be many hours of darkness every night, so we’ll have plenty of time to get our main purpose.

At the same time, we are searching for the enchanting winter conditions. During March, being so far North will surely guarantee us that we’ll see the most precious snowy scenes. Visiting all those magical locations under a wonderful snow blanket, will bring us constant chances for amazing pictures.

Finally, we would like to highlight the precious Arctic light that we will be enjoying in March. At this latitude, the sun will always be quite low in the sky during the winter months, something which will mean that the light will be constantly soft and nice, ideal for photography.

Who is this Tromso Photo Tour for?

Our Tromso photo tour is suitable for all ages, physical conditions and experience levels. All the locations are easily accessible, so there is no need for special conditions to come with us.

Northern Lights at Tromso Photo Tour, Norway

Today, we will get up early to photograph the first sunrise of this Tromso Photo Tour. For this, we will head to a location on the outskirts of the city.

After breakfast, we will move to an area about an hour from Tromso, Sommarøya. Here, we will spend the rest of the afternoon, photographing its beautiful coastal landscapes, contrasting with the snow. Additionally, the greenish colors of the area’s waters will enable us to capture fabulous images. With all this, we can spend the rest of the day immortalizing the surroundings of the village, including the sunset.

Once it has gotten dark, we will remain in Sommarøya to try and photograph the Northern Lights from here.

Tromso Photo Tour at dawn

After resting from the intense previous day, today we will go to photograph another different area, Ersfjordbotn. Here we will photograph the first lights of the day and take the opportunity to spend the morning.

Then, we will move to Tromvik, where we will stay until sunset. For this, we will head to one of the beautiful wild beaches located on the outskirts of the village.

As soon as it gets dark, we will be ready to photograph the Northern Lights from one of these beaches.

Once more, we will rise early to go in search of the colors of dawn. We will head east of Tromso, as we will spend the entire day in the Lyngenfjorden area. From here, we will have incredible views of the colossal Lyngen Alps, so we will spend quite some time photographing them.

Additionally, we will visit the Breivikeidet area, where we can also capture magical snowy landscapes. Throughout the day, we will be surrounded by incredibly beautiful locations. Because of this, the photographic opportunities will be endless.

After photographing the sunset with the Lyngen Alps in the background, we will wait for nightfall to try to photograph the Northern Lights.

Today we will spend our last full day in Tromso, so we will try to make the most of every minute. In the morning, we will visit the area north of Tromso, going to Skulsfjord and Kvaloyvagen. In both locations, we will be able to photograph their beautiful coast, along which there are numerous wild beaches. Again, we will be amazed by the beautiful emerald color of their waters, which sometimes remind us of the Caribbean.

In the afternoon, we will return to the city for one of the most fruitful visits of the trip, the ascent on the Fjellheisen. To reach the mountain Storsteinen, we will have to take a cable car (not included in the price), which will take us to an extraordinary viewpoint. From here, the view of Tromso, with the mountains and the fjord in the background, is spectacular. Therefore, it will be a perfect place to photograph the last sunset of the trip, as the beautiful Arctic light floods the scene. Similarly, the shots from the viewpoint during the blue hour are fantastic.

When it gets dark, we will try again to photograph the Northern Lights in the vicinity of the city. Afterwards, we will return to rest at our accommodation.

General Considerations

This Tromso Photo Tour is organized by the Official Travel Agency ‘Viajes Fotográficos – Dream Photo Expeditions’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘the travel agency’).

The travel agency carefully studies and designs all the trips that we offer, always trying to adapt them to our travelers needs. All our itineraries and activities are chosen from a photographic point of view. However, the itinerary shown here is just an idea of some of the places that we will be visiting, not being contractual information about what we’ll do during the trip. The tour leaders, photo guides, other guides and/or the travel agency and organizers of the tour, reserve always the right to do any kind of changes to the itinerary and the tour, both before and during the trip.

In this sense, it will be up to the photographer/s guide/s or to the travel agency, the decision of changing any of the programmed activities, places to visit, and shooting sessions for each day, depending on factors as weather, security or light conditions, but not limited to these. We will always be in search of the best possible experiences and moments of light for the customers of this trip. However, sometimes we may decide to change plans depending on some factors. The program may also be changed in case of emergency, injury of illness of any of the participants or main photographers.

At the same time, both the photographers and the travel agency reserves the right of changing the tour leader/s, in case it’s necessary. Some of the reasons might include injuries, illness or hospitalization, severe health problems, accidents, (both of themselves as well as first grade relatives too), etc. In those cases, the agency will bring another photographer able to guide the group in the same destination.

Each traveler is responsible of having all the documentation needed for the trip, as well as for entering the destination/s. To visit Norway, you need a valid Passport and might need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the country. Always check the requirements with your country authorities before traveling to a foreign destination.

The photographers and the travel agency have no responsibility about each traveler’s documentation, or about the requirements to be allowed to enter in Norway or any other country.

Travel Insurance

This Tromso Photo Tour includes a basic assistance insurance. However, we strongly recommend you to bring a full travel insurance, which has unlimited or high limit money coverages in case of accident or disease.

Personal Counseling

The travel agency will give personal counseling and advice to travelers when purchasing their trip. Customers will receive a list with everything that they might need for the route, tips about how to prepare a medical kit for the travel, recommendations about the photography gear for the place, etc… At the same time, our staff will be happy to help and solve any doubt that the clients could have while they are preparing their trip.

We are completely sure that this Tromso Photo Tour will be an unforgettable experience for travelers, as well as an intensive learning process. The travel agency will always try to promote values such as respect (cultural, social and environmental). Those values will always prevail in all our trips. At the same time, ‘Dream Photo Expeditions’ will always ensure that the impact of their trips is never negative for the country, their citizens or their wildlife.

The travel agency, tour leaders, guides, or the photographers hosting the trip, will have no responsibility at all for any accident, loss, theft or damage suffered by the customers participating on it.

Each customer declares that he or she accepts all the conditions on this trip at the time he or she is doing a reservation request and/or payment for it.

At the moment of booking, the client will be required to send an initial payment of US$1,000. Payments can be done by bank transfer, by credit or debit card, and by PayPal. However, please notice that credit or debit card and PayPal payments are subject to a supplement fee, to cover the costs of these payment methods.

The remaining balance will be due 90 days prior to the trip. If one client doesn’t make effective any of the expected payments in the deadline, the organizers has the right to cancel the contract with that participant, without any refund, as the terms previously seen. The features that make up the combined travel contract come from the information given to the client in the brochure or program, as well as from the indications regarding this information that could have been given when confirming the reservation.

In case the agency doesn’t complete the minimum group needed to confirm the trip, customers will have the choice between doing the trip paying an extra supplement, or being issued a full refund.

If the travel agency needs to cancel the trip, for any reason, customers will get a 100% refund of the cost of the photo tour.

However if the client doesn’t show or cancels the trip, the following cancellation policies will be applied:

– Less than 90 days prior to the trip: US$1,000.
– Greater than 90 days prior to the trip: 100% of the trip cost.

Prices are based in the Exchange rates by January, the 17th, 2024. The currency may be updated until 21 days prior to the departure, according to Spanish Travel Laws, applying a supplement/discount in case of change.

Once the reservation is done by the client, and the services and their prices are confirmed by us, these prices only could be revised until 20 calendar days prior to the departure dates, only in case there are variations in the transportation costs (including the fuel prices), in accommodations, in rates and taxes referring to certain services (such as landing, boarding in ports and airports), or in monetary exchange rates applied to the trip.

This is just a list of the ideal gear for a trip like this. However, there is no need at all to have or bring all this gear. You can join the trip using any kind of camera, or even a smartphone!

We recommend you to bring a DSLR or Mirrorless system camera with interchangeable lenses, but you can join the photo tour bringing any kind of camera, including compact ones, or even a smartphone.

Wide Angle Lens

For example, a 14-24mm or a 16-35mm

A wide angle lens will be really useful to capture the marvelous Arctic landscapes around Tromso. It’s also interesting that it’s a fast lens (f/2’8 or faster), for the Northern Lights photography sessions.

Standard Zoom

For example, a 24-70MM

An standard zoom, like a 24-70mm, or a 24-105mm, will be very useful on this trip. With that focal length range, you will be able to capture a great variety of the scenes we’ll find.

A telephoto lens like a 70-200mm won’t be very useful on this trip. It might be useful to capture some distant sceneries, like distant mountains, but it would also add extra weight to your backpack.

FOR EXAMPLE, A 14MM 1'8 OR A 20MM 1'4

These kind of lenses are not really essential, if you already have a fast wide angle. However, if you already have a lens like a 14mm 1’8 or a 20mm 1’4, it would be perfect for the Northern Lights sessions.

A tripod will be needed for our low light photography sessions, such as the sunrise, sunset and night photography ones. We recommend you bringing a really sturdy one, so it’s not easily moved by the wind.

We recommend you bringing ND filters for long exposure photography, as well as graduated ND filter for sunrises and sunsets. A polarizer filter will be very useful too, to add saturation or avoid reflections.

Bringing a remote or an intervalometer will be a great idea, because they will be very useful in low light sessions, avoiding the need to touch the camera, and therefore minimizing the risk of moved images.

Enough spare batteries

Bringing enough extra batteries is essential for a trip like this. Given the cold temperatures, batteries will run much faster than usual. Therefore, you should bring enough batteries to avoid running out of energies.

We also recommend you bringing enough memory cards so you can store all the pictures you will take during the trip, or even doing security copies. Given their low price, it’s better to carry extra cards.

Solo Traveler

Another great journey guided by Sergio Lanza. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions and the lack of nighttime sightings, the trip was fantastic thanks to Sergio’s efforts, dedication, and determination to make it a success. Considering the slim chances of witnessing the Northern Lights in Tromso and its surroundings, he suggested a journey to Finland, where the weather was much better for aurora hunting. He didn’t hesitate to make the extra effort of driving an additional 800 kilometers round trip on winter roads. It was a very enjoyable and interesting excursion, made even more special by a spectacular night of Northern Lights, preceded by a remarkable sunset and followed by a beautiful sunrise.

Even with the challenging weather in the Tromso area, Sergio never gave up; he always sought and took advantage of any photographic opportunities. After the main trip, he offered us an extension to the incredible islands of Sommaroy and Senja, providing us with what might have been the most spectacular day of the entire combined journey to the Lofoten Islands and Tromso. Throughout it all, Sergio maintained a positive attitude, his generosity, and his helpful and approachable nature, which set him apart. is highly recommended, 1000%!
